A solute is the solid that is dissolved in a liquid. The solvent is the liquid in which something is dissolved in. For example, with salt water, the Na and Cl are the two solutes, and the H2O is the solvent.

A solute is what is being disolved, and a solvent is what is disolving the solute...thus, they make a solution. For example, to make a solution of saltwater, you would take salt, which would be you solute, and water, which would be you solvent. I think of it like this: In the military, the lower ranks SOLUTE the higher ranks, therefore, the part of the solution that surrenders its make-up to the other part is the lower rank.
