My beautiful, sweet and loving kitten Lightining died tonight. My dog thought he was trying to get his dinner and tried to warn him off and carry on eating but he caught the kittens head and punctured his skull. His head was no bigger than a snooker ball and my dog is a Labrador so you can see the comparison. Thankfully it was instant, the dog didn't mean it, my husband said it was all very quick and when it was over the dog tried to push him with his nose to wake him up . I was at work at the time and when I got home it was all over. We have just taken him to the vet to dispose of him and even the nurse was in tears. He was not a very lucky cat really, he has had many many near misses, it seems that his 9 lives were used up in a very short time. We still have his brother though so at least there is some comfort in that. My little son is very upset and even my "hard as nails" husband has been crying, he feels guilty as he was threre and just couldnt stop it as it happened so quickly.

Oh no the poor little soul, he didnt have much luck at all did he. How sad is that.
I cant believe people have given thumbs down?? The only people needing thumbs down is those who blame the dog!! Grow a brain, it was unforseeable!!
I have a cat called Tuono, its italian for thunder apparently, (he was born in a thunder storm) would of loved lightening most probably.
I hope you all recover from whats happened, its so sad :'(

I had a cat that died a few months ago. She got in a fight with my dog and died, so I know how you feel. I am very, very sorry to hear about your loss. I hope that Lightning will have a good time in cat heaven/ his next life or whatever happens after death. Remember, Lightning could be watching over you as a ghost or from heaven. He will never really be gone because he will be with you spiritually.

You can comfort yourself all you want, but this was really your fault for putting him in a bad situation. Kittens don't know to leave big dogs alone, and maybe he was hungry and trying to get to the food. Somebody should have made sure the kitten stayed away from the dog when he was eating. When you say he was unlucky and had many near misses even though he was so young, I wonder if he didn't just end up in a household where nobody cared enough to protect him. I know a lot of people will think I am very mean for writing this, but it sounds like this was a senseless death that could have been prevented with a little foresight and care. It will be interesting to see how long his brother survives-- hopefully you have learned something from this.
PS: In addition to the dishwasher, ALWAYS check the washing machine and the dryer before starting them-- a lot of cats die there, too.

Im sorry that the kitten was killed by a dog that has food aggresion but what is your question? And what does this have to do with a dishwasher? You said the dog did not mean to but I think it did.It was protecting his food.Did not want the kitten near his food. It`s sad that it was a kitten that the dog attacked but next time it could be your son, husband or even you that the dog attacks.Your dog needs obidient training ASAP.The dog nudge the kitten not to try to wake him up but because the dog knew something was wrong with the kitten. You may not want to believe me but although your dog can not think he wants to kill the kitten he was angry and knew that attacking the kitten would get the kitten away from his food.

For the safety of your present and future cats please make sure that they cannot go by your dog while he is eating.
This was a freak accident and surely could not have prevented as you could not have forseen it coming. But now you know that your dog can be aggressive while eating so you can prevent any further incidents.
Sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear that.
Death does happen. It's not pretty, and it's hard when it happens to a young one. Mercifully, it was likely quick, as you said, and the kitten never knew.

I am so sorry-I know your heart is breaking. It wasn't your dog's fault-just one of those horrible accidents. He'll be pining for the kitten for awhile.
I wish I could offer some sort of comfort for you,but I know it will take time for all of you to get over this. x

How sad - I am sorry about your kitten. Thanks for posting your story - there is a warning here for all of us who keep cats & dogs - their interaction, especially when feeding, must be supervised.
