any ideas? what would be the range of recognize?

There are basically two types of night modes. The first type actually slows down the shutter speed to allow more light to reach the sensor - the major flaw is that you see blurring with any motion in the scene. The second type uses a infrared (IR) light - this is easily recognized by the green-tinted videos. I think that most Sony camcorders uses the IR method.
