No doubt, priests say the person is going to heaven to comfort the family. In reality, the priest cannot know one way or the other. In some cases, he may have a pretty good idea, but ultimately the choice is God's.
It is unfortunate that men of God would sacrifice truth to comfort people. No doubt, comfort should be given, but not at the expense of what is right. No end of sin is justified by claiming that it helped someone.
He should not say whether the dead will go to heaven or hell, only that they are in God's just hands. When asked where they will go, he should say that it is God's right to choose alone.

The priest does'nt want to lose his clientele, which is his bread and butter. Also he does'nt want to offend the survivors, so the funeral is as pretty as can be to please those in attendance.
As for what happens to the dead, that remains to interpretation. Many think there's a burning, torturous place for the bad. If you read the Bible carefully, this is not the case. Basically, when you die, you paid for your sins with death. You are then non-existent, no memories, no feelings, no concept of time passing. You have only the hope of a resurrection to bring you back alive again. This is suppose to happen in the future when many that have died will come back (read Revelations). As for the term "Hell" that comes from an old German word "Hoelle" which stands for the grave. The burning place that we know comes from Jesus's story of the fires of Gehenna. This was a literal town that was walled. Outside one of the walls fire was kept burning to help destroy the trash of the city, as well as criminal that have died. Hence, the bad people were kept burning, so to speak.
So technically, everyone goes to "hell" in the end. Maybe the priests should revamp there sermons to reflect proper interpretations.

Being good or bad doesn't determine whether u go to Heaven or Hell. If u Believe in Christ and try to live for Him then you'll go to Heaven. And yes people still sin, the reason you probably haven't heard a priest say someone is going to Hell is b/c it's not the best thing to say to a mourning family.

The reason why they always say he was a good person, because people would get really ticked off if he got up there and said, This guy was a terrible wife beating drunk!..hehe
Yes sin is still around. people commit sin everyday.
Have you ever lied, stole, lusted? These are sins.
Romans 3:23 For ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
We have all sinned and deserve death because of it.
Romans 3:24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in christ Jesus.
Everyone has sinned, everyone on earth. No one has a free trip to heaven. and everyone derserves hell......BUT.... God sent His Son Jesus to pay the price for the law YOU broke. You broke Gods law, Jesus paid the price if you accept His free gift of salvation.
If you know you have sinned, turn from your sin to Jesus as your Personal Savior and LORD. and trust in Him for the rest of your life.
So in final answer to your question, good and bad people go to hell.
ONLY forgiven people go to Heaven.

Ultimately the priest is not making any determination of the eternal destination of a person. However, it much easier to determine someone is going to heaven based on the belief of the religion. If one believes in grace, then it would be difficult to know what considerations are taken in the life of any given person. We cannot know every consideration. For instance suicide may be a sin, but only God knows the state of mind of that individual. Therefore, they may not be held accountable for that sin because they were not in control of the situation.

The funeral is for the people left behind, not the dead person. The priest says kind words to give some comfort to those who are grieving a loss.

alot of "good" people won't be making it to heaven either, and every funeral that I have been to if the person was not saved, the pastor never said that. And if you have heard anyone say it when it is possibly not true, well maybe it's just to make the family feel better, but it shouldn't be said if that persons life didn't prove it.

At my aunt's funeral the priest did not say she was going to heaven. We were all sad that she died but she was never really a nice woman and later when someone mentioned it we thought it was funny. (he did not once say she would be with the Lord.)
What her beliefs were, I am not sure. maybe she is with Him right now.

I agree with Pops. They are for the living. No one on earth can say who is going to heaven and who is going to hell. That is judging, and something only the Lord should do. Good Luck!!!!

How you difine good ? The only one that's good is God. No one is a good person, since people born with sinfull nature. None of us is perfect, we break one commandments we break them all. Even after we receive Jesus, we still strive on our sin. That's why God send His Son Jesus, to shed His blood for us. Because God knows that we're not perfect. We need The Savior, to save us from hell.
In a funeral, we don't know the heart of the people who died, the one who's going to make the final judgement is God, not us.
I understand your point though. But here's my final thought, without repentance and submiting yourself to Jesus, the good deeds that you've done all your life is nothing.
