Is there anything that I can do to my VHS tapes to stop my V HS tapes from skipping/jumping??
I've cleaned all the heads.
All my vcr's are auto tracking and there are no settings on the vcr nor on the remote to manually manipulate anything like this. I have some unreplaceable vhs home movies(taped years ago) that I want to watch and transfer to dvd-r but they're skipping or jumping a lot if you know what i mean(bottom to top) .
This same problem occurs in all three of my modern vcrs including my new DVR . I've tried fully fast forwarding them then fully rewinding them on all 3 machines..this rarely fixes the situation.

Is there anything that I can do to the VHS tape to stop this from doing this?

Please advise. Any serious help on this matter will be appreciated.

thanks!

Will the demagnetizer erase my tapes?

I'm a computer tech. Can I clean the tapes myself? Do I use an aircan? thanks again!

Did you demagnetize the tape path when you had the VCR's open? You need a cassette tape head demagnetizer to go over the heads, capstans, and rollers.

You did use a wet cleaner and wipes to clean the VCR heads, right? Did you clean the rest of the tape path (capstans, rollers)?

Are you sure the tapes are still in good shape? Use a pencil to press the tab that opens the flap over the tape when it's in a spot that's really bad. Are there creases or dirt on the tape? If so, you might need to have the tape professionally cleaned. This will cost some $$ and it probably won't be easy to find, but it could get rid of the problem.

Since you want these copied so badly, you might take it to a professional media translation firm and have them do it. They have pro quality equipment and can probably find a way to lock the picture to make the copy. Not the cheapest option, but probably the highest chance for immediate success.

they're merely tape and are not fairly sticky so on account that there is little use for them now then there'll be much less use for them sooner or later. that's in contrast to duct tape which will consistently be used and necessary.

minus cleaning the heads (use a dry cleaner tape not wet)
it could be a matter of your tracking be off.
if the problem only happens when you view tapes and not when you watch tv (picture jumps) than its definately something to do with the tapes.
if it happens during watching tv than its your horizontal settings.(vertical hold etc..)
