Depends on the girl's tone of voice and body language when she said it and how he took it. If it was a joke and the tone suggested that (and maybe a smile to go with it), and the guy is a reasonable kind of guy; then I doubt it is that big a deal. If he is hypersensitive or it came across like the girl actually thought he was gay, it could be pretty bad here (level 8 or 9). But it isn't unsalvageable. With time this should be forgottten, especially if no more gay jokes are made. I don't see this being too long-term, but I would be careful with the foot-in-mouth thing in the future.

Yikes! You cannot assume/identify a guy's sexual preference only because he does not have a girlfriend. Humm, is there anytyhing else bothering you that you noticed on his behavior or appearance.
Maybe you should try to befriend him a little bit longer before invading his privacy, if you really think his sexuality is an issue.
or make it casual: "if you were going to your i.e. Prom, Xmas Party...what type of girl (actress, singer, etc) you would like to go with?". Then he probably will give you a hint : 1) he is single or not 2) he likes girls
Good Luck!

oh hell no!! that would be a 10 for sure...you were doing alright until the last bit of information...if you are trying to get with a guy, which I will assume is straight because he should actually be interested in you, then the worst thing you can do is imply he is not straight.
Do the girlfriend question thing but follow it up with some kind of compliment or something.
Good luck!

That's a 10.
First of all, do you have reason to beleive the guy is gay? If you have no reason to believe it then don't assume it.
You can ask about the girlfriend, but if the reply is "I don't have a girlfriend" then ask "Oh, so you're single?" If he has a boyfriend he will say, "No quite, I just don't have a girlfriend" or something like that.

4. It's kinda clever, but a lot of guys (even gay ones, maybe?) don't like being teased about having a boyfriend. or something. Yeah.. it just just seems more juvenile than asking "are you straight?". aha. The first part was okay though.

It should be more direct, just ask the dude if he is gay. The above conversation would work too, and you can always play it off as a joke if he is offended. Ill rate it a 6.

10 10 10...that's a horrible thing to say to a man! gay or not, that's a personal thing. especially if he's straight, you'll never have a chance to be with that guy anymore, you've totally offended him and if he's gay, maybe he thinks it's none of your business

Maybe a 7. Depends on how you bouce back from it. My question is this, why would you just assume that he's gay rather than think he's single?
