I just recently brought a female brussels griffon and had a question to ask and I only want a serious answer. The other night I was about to go to my bedroom when my puppy attached herself to my leg and well was making a "humping" motion. I swatted her off and she continued to make the motion for about 10 seconds and stopped. I have seen a dog that was a girl do this once but I didnt know why. She is 4 months old. Is she in heat? I looked it up but couldnt find anything. She is definently (sp) a SHE.
Also we want to crate train her but she is having difficulty and is pooing and peeing everywhere. I know she is a puppy and it will take a little while, but I heard pets from pet stores are harder to crate train because they are used to going to the bathroom in there place and have no problem doing it in there even though it is to just be a place for them to relax. She gets walked in the morning, stays in the crate in afternoon, walked when I get home and again at night.. advice??

To the people who have bred dogs.
I work and there will be a day or two during the month where she may spend 6 hours in the crate. I heard that this is fine at a certain age. It has only happened once this month but I didnt want her to stay in there that long so I let her stay in the house while I was gone. I clean it out everytime she poos in the crate. She doesnt seem to have a problem going in there and laying in it. Thats the problem. It usually happens when we put her in there at night. I find her in the morning and she has pooed in there and it doesnt seem to bother her. I also walk her as much as I can but she still seems to poo and pee all over the floor. We have only had her two weeks? Perhaps she will grow out of it?
AND NO IT IS NOT CRUEL> DOGS ARE NATURAL DEN ANIMALS AND ENJOY THE CRATES BECAUSE IT GIVES THEM THE SENSE OF HAVING THERE OWN LITTLE PLACE

Sounds like your little Brussels is just "testing the waters" to see what she can get away with. All pups do it, some a little more aggressive than others. Instead of swatting at her, bend down and sternly say "No" as you "tweak" her on the scruff of her neck with your thumb and index finger. "Tweak" meaning grab her with the fingers and give a little shake. Once she is off of you praise her and continue on. Be consistent.
On housebreaking.... you never want to give them run of a large area to begin with. They need to earn that right. Crate training helps with potty habits. It's important is to establish a good, steady routine for her. Start by pottying her often. Only after she does her business does she 'earn' the right to go into other areas of the house with you. As she tires.... retire her back to her crate. Keep clean bedding. The size of the crate is important too. Do not give her enough space where she can potty and walk away.... even to the far side of a crate. Dogs naturally want to away from their own excrement. You are using that desire to help train your pup.
Hope this helps!

I got a puppy from a Pet Store and it was hard to train her too. But now she's eight years old and has a heart murmur, kidney disease, and behavioral problems. I'm not being mean but you should have never gotten that puppy from there because she COULD possibly have some severe health problems in her future:(
Crate trianing is quite effective, just make sure she just has enough room to stand and turn around, some petstore puppies don't take to this so use the crate but for about every month they are old they can hold it for that many hours
example: 2 months old=2 hours of bladder

HUMPING: In many cases mounting is done to display dominance, not necessarily for sexual reasons. Should your dog initiate such behavior, push her down immediately, and say NO in a firm voice. The mounting of inanimate objects may be performed by young canines-both male and female models-to relieve sexual frustration.
CRATE TRAINING: Line the crate with a blanket, doggie pillow, or soft towel. Add a couple of toys. Encourage the puppy to "potty" outside before entering the crate. Place the puppy in the crate for a short period of time. Provide a small treat, so the puppy associates its confinement with good things. Stay nearby until the puppy settles down. Removing the puppy's collar will prevent it fromgetting snagged on any part of the crate. Never release the puppy when it barks. Wait until it stops barking before releasing. Begin placing the puppy in the crate for its naps and other downtimes. During the day, you should never leave the puppy in the crate for more than 4 hours at a time. The puppy should sleep in the crate during the night. Be aware that it will probably require at least one potty break during the night. After your puppy is released from the crate, take it outside to potty. If it does, praise the puppy, offer treats, and aloow it to roam the house freely for a while. If not, return the puppy to the crate for 10 to 15 minutes. Then try again. Give the puppy plenty of chances to potty outside: 1st thing in the morning, after every meal, after every nap, after strenuous play sessions, last thing at night, and during the night if it appears restless. When taking the puppy outside, always take it out the same door and to the same spot. DO NOT admonish a dog [especially a puppy] if it goes potty in the house. Negative reinforcement DOES NOT WORK with housebreaking.

The humping is normal---she's just getting the urge. Give her a stuffed animal to have her "fun" with. And she might be getting ready to be in heat--you should get her spayed as soon as possible---yes she is old enough now.
She is spending too much time in the crate---I assume you work and leave her there while you are gone. Thats not good and certainly not fair to expect her to hold her bladder and poo that long. A puppy that age poops 4-5 times a day and needs to go outside every couple of hours. I am going through this right now with my 4 mo old pup. The crate cannot be too big for the dog or it will make a mess, if its smaller, the dog does not want to lay in its mess. Good Luck.

Humping is a dominance thing. SHe is trying to show you that she is the dominat one in your relationship. SHe is not respecting your authority.
She is most likey to young to be in heat yet. Having her spayed before her first heat is great for her health and will lower her cancer risk a bunch. She will also be a better pet if spayed.
Work on puppy obedience training with her. It will help to establish you as the learder and dominat figure in the pack.
I have not heard that pet store pups are harder to train than others. Some breeds are harder to train than others. At four months she is still young and needs to go alot. Make sure the crate is not to large to give her to much room to mess and get away from it. other than that patience and time will solve the problem. Good luck with her.
Brussels Griffons are so cute. I do not see alot of them and I think they are just adorable.

first, she is humping you as a dominance thing. when you get her fixed it will stop that. my pup got fixed at 4 months, prior to that she liked to hump her stuffed animals that are larger than her. she hasnt done it since. if she contines to do it, i would recommend pinning her on the ground and doing it to her. it sounds odd, but she'll see you are dominant and the leader. sometimes they get overly hyper and start doing it.
as for the crate, get one that is only large enough for her to lay in, and turn around in. my older dog had no problem laying in her own filth either, but she's kinda retarded so hopefully your dog wont have that problem. make sure you let your pup out about 20 mintes after eating, and then 20 minutes before going in the crate and then agian right before going in the crate, so she has had enough time to get everything out of her system. it will take a little while, but she will get the schedule.

Humping at this age is most likely a dominance issue. The more dominant animal is the one doing the humping. Female dogs also hump to show dominance. An alpha female will hump on a submissive male. Anyway unless you plan on breeding your pups now is the time to get the male neutered. At 5 months of age I doubt the female is mature enough to go into heat yet.

The humping could be a sign that she wants to sleep with you. Seriously. The warmth of another animal is really important at that stage to them. Also, the crate training, it sucks, but persistence. Always give treats for good potty. And let her out A LOT.

Sometimes a dog will "hump" because of a urinary tract infection. Ask your vet and find out if there are any other medical reasons for it.
