I get anxiety attacks, and would like to use something other then tranquilizers to calm me down. Is there anything that can give you the same effect as a tranquilizer? You know, that calming of the mind/body....

Physical activities like jogging, kickboxing anything to vent the physical pain then a good cry a good meal and a great sleep.
If these things do not help you the easy fix would be smoking a joint i guess...but that is only temporary. Also breathing deeply 10 times will make you feel a whole lot better. I really hope this helps you because I know what it feels like and it is no picnic. I found all these things make a difference.

Your physician may try you on an anti-anxiety medication like Effexor or Paxil. These medications are also used to treat depression. They can be very effective at reducing panic and anxiety symptoms as well as the associated physical symptoms. There is no potential for addicition, which can be a problem with short acting tranquilizers. However, there are potential side effects which your doctor can discuss with you.

The other thing that can be very important is counselling. Techniques like cognitive behavioural therapy can be self-learned from books or taught by a qualified psychotherapist. This can actually help more than medication especially in the long run.

tranquilizers are not the best for chronic panic attacks. Zoloft works well. Also a low dose of what is really a blood pressure med called propanal. Buspar can also be helpful. Deep breathing and patience with yourself!

I don't think anything acts as fast as a tranquilizer. Excersize does help to get rid of the stress overload. If there was something other than pills that would work many of us would do it.

Several things can help.

St John's Wort is supposed to be good.

Another thing you can try is breathing exercises, trying to slow your breathing down. Also breathing into a paper bag can help, it allows your body to reabsorb carbon dixiode and so redcudes the anxiety.
