The first sign is short term memory loss, although the longer term memory is still intact. You find you might often be repeating the same conversation over and over again with someone in the early stages of Alzheimers. The next thing is then forgetting how to do simple every day tasks, like cooking or vacuuming and the memory just gets worse from there, can't recognise family members, how to dress themselves etc. My Mum has just been diagnosed with it.
