As several other people have pointed out, The St Ledger (run at Doncaster), is the oldest Classic in the world.

As far as the oldest race goes, The Newmarket Town Plate is recognised as the first race to be run under WRITTEN rules. Reports as to when it was first run vary, sometime between 1664 and 1666 seems to be the consensus. The race is still run in Newmarket to this day over 3 miles 6 furlongs and is open to anyone (providing they have the necessary experience).
