I would have a setting designed as a star... you could have a large diamond in the center of the star and then smaller diamond filling in the point- like pave.
Gold or platimum is a lot easier to work with then trying to have a diamond custom cut. Also I image a star would be hard to do and it would have to be a HUGE diamond.
Show your tattoo to a jewerly and have them design something.

RE:
Where can I find a star-shaped diamond engagement ring?
I have a tatoo on my hand of a shooting star and would prefer my engagement ring to match. Anyone know where I can locate a star-shaped diamond or emerald?

As a jeweler, i can tell you that you don't want a star shaped emerald. Emeralds are too soft to be cut into most fancy shapes. I would stick with a diamond. If you can't afford a diamond, try moissonite. Moissonite is so close to a real diamond that even diamond testers are fooled. However moissonite does have a very-very slight yellow tint to it. Congrats

I think this would be to difficult to cut, as well as expensive, why not choose a square cut diamond and have the setting custom made so that the prongs are in a star cut out and the diamond will look exactly like a Starr

Never seen this before. I imagine that the arms of the star would be too thin to support the stress of a ring setting.
I wouldn't worry about matching your ring to your tatoo. Even if you have a large ring, no will ever notice that the ring is star-shaped.

Get Tiffany's to custom make it for you. It cost my cousin a lot of money though. But I think it was worth it.

You may have to ask a jeweler to custom order it.
