There is a program called VLC media player, it pretty much plays everything I own or download. Especially Videos and avi files with divx codecs.

Windows Media Player handles .avi files, but lamda_chi is correct- VLC Media player is better because it recognizes many of the newer types of encoding (like DivX) without having to go look for codec packs to install.

Quicktime is among the worst pieces of software you can install on a Windows-based machine (It's fine for Macs though). Avoid it if you can...

winamp, windows media player, in fact most video players will support .avi files. You must ensure you have the correct codec though

I use real player or quicktime they seem to be the only ones that will run mine
