I do not mean atheistic individuals but tribes, kingdoms, entire civilizations that thrived without a god or gods of some kind and fluorished enough to leave some trace of their existence. Just curious.

Take a look at China sometime. China is almost entirely atheist.

If things in the US don't start changing, you'll probably be pledging allegiance to their flag pretty soon. :) I'd say they're doing alright for themselves.

I've seen it argued that the Worlds Oldest Profession is actually clergy, rather than prostitution. The religious impulse is very strong, I know of culture such as you describe. Attempts by individuals to suppress or stamp out religion have never worked, what happens is that the religious go underground until it's safe to practice openly. The Communist Governments of China and the Soviet Union, both tried and both failed. The Russian Orthodox Church is stronger than ever, as are Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism.

Sure. Buddhists still exist, but like all tribes, peoples, religions, the rest passed away as all things do.

There are many records in the Bible of those who were in opposition, and did'nt believe in God. See Manasseh, in particular.
