you might NOT need to go as far as equiptments. all you can use is 3 or 4 peices of board and a ladder and nail and hammer and you brace the post. i have seen some folks uses rope and peg which works as well. this will prevent the post from moving either direction once the soil around it cannot support it anymore.

Seriously, though, if you aren't trying to dig out below the bottom of the posts, four guyropes attached to substantial wooden pegs hammered into the ground would be my choice (if there wasn't anything else handy to moor the guyropes).
When you fill in your excavation, you need to be careful to compact the soil around each lamp post carefully and evenly, or they might start to lean after a few days.
While digging, watch out for the cables which supply the lamps!
