DVD-R and DVD+R are similar but different standards. They're the result of manufactures couldn't agree to produce the same kind of discs. Generally speaking, DVD+R appear to be a little better produced. I would use DVD+R to backup my data over DVD-R any day. Whether if your DVD burner can take a +R disk is really dependent on the DVD burner. If it says + and - R, then it can do both. If it only says +R or -R, it's probably only meant for that one kind. Hope this help

It depends on your burner. Check the box that it came in and see if it lists both formats. Most new burners will support all formats if it's a good one. The only difference is, the +R will usually have faster burn speeds than the -R. At least that was true in the early going. They may be the same now.

DVD-R (pronounced as DVDR or DVD "Dash" R) is a DVD recordable format. A DVD-R has a larger storage capacity than a CD-R, typically 4.7 GB (or 4.38 GiB) instead of 700 MB, although the capacity of the original standard developed by Pioneer was 3.95 GB (3.68 GiB). Pioneer has also developed an 8.54 GB dual layer version, which appeared on the market in 2005. A DVD-R can be written to only once, whereas a DVD-RW (DVD-rewritable) can be rewritten multiple times.

DVD "dash" (-)
First DVD recordable format released in the market. Developed by Pioneer and backed by the DVD Forum. Has broader playback compatibility than the "+" especially with much older players. The dash format is based on an older CD-R/RW format for easy upgrade or migration for disc manufacturers.
DVD "plus" (+)
Developed by Philips and Sony with their DVD+RW Alliance. Came out after the "-" format.

Well, doll, it's a different format of recording, you must check you DVD recording states on this and if it's able to burn DVD -/+ R (this means it can record both formats) you better rec on DVD-R because most DVD players don't support the + format and such will be only playable on the recording player.

I've asked many a storeperson about this question. They've all told me they're the same, but one is older. It doesn't matter which one you use, you can use either, one's not better than the other.
