It started back in the day when you got married at 18 got a job and proceeded to work your *** off every day to support the several kids you had early in your marriage. By the time you hit forty your kids were all grown and starting families of your own and, back in the day, assuming that you stuck with the company that first gave you a job, you then would have risen to some sort of supervisor level position and would enjoy a fair amount of job security and have a pension to look forward to. It was then and only then that you could think of doing things like enjoying a long weekend with just you and your spouse at a vacation spot on the beach once and awhile, etc...
Of course now, 60 is the new 40....

Life begins at 40, according to Eric Partridge's Dictionary of Catch Phrases, 'was generated in the 1940's by a much-read book so titled - and by a popular song.'

It started in the school of Life experience. By the age of forty one has collected sufficient theoretical and practical experience and knowledge and it is now time to experiment with these for applications in real life.

It was first said by the chap who lived at number 39. The woman next door at number 40 was a real sex bomb who provided the life and soul to any party -- yup even at funerals too, So it was considered that if you wanted to 'get a life' then you should visit and re-visit number 40.

I guess it really means "a new life starts at 40" - the kids have moved out and are self sufficient - the start of "me" time, or "us" time for couples.
That told Julia, didn't it? Couldn't find what she'd said, though, I suppose it got deleted (for abuse??)
