While I don't believe in God, I also don't believe you can spell.
And admittedly, my evidence for the second is more incontrovertible than the first.

A-T-H-E-I-S-M (spelled correctly) is not something that is stumbled on in the dark or in a blinding flash. To achieve rationality is a developmental process that has to overcome the mindless programming that has been shoved at you since childhood. I'm amazed that I started asking the right questions when I was eleven and even more amazed that I was able to take the "because" answers of religion with a jaundiced eye at such a young age. Still it took three more years before I called myself an agnostic and three hard years more before being to call myself an Atheist. Happy about it? Sometimes I envy delusionalists who think they are going to end up in some cosmic Disneyland when they die, instead of the void on non-existence, but in the end, I'm happy I do not live in the delusional haze that seems to keep them anesthetized to reality. Non-believer does not make one a believer any more than being anti Nazi make you a Nazi.

I can't get over the lack of logic and intellect shown in a lot of these questions. Either, you are generally misguided, misinformed, uneducated and illogical or you are probably about 12 years old (like many of the people on here!) who lacks an education and common sense yet!
As the previous answers says it is the not believing in god that makes an atheist what we are. It is that simple. Use some grey cells!

.............. Athiests don't call themselves nonbelievers. In fact, religious people have been specifically asked to stop using that term because it implies that Athiests believe in nothing and it is an insult to Atheists because it's not true. It's also a religious term which makes no sense at all when applied to Atheists because Atheists don't believe in any god at all. So why would an Atheist use a religious term to describe themselves?
Honestly....

The may actually deny the existence of a god/gods. I'm a non-believer but I don't feel comfortable calling myself an Atheist because I'm open to any possibility. It's all unknown to me.

No. Atheists believe that god does not exist. That's the definition, and it should be self-explanatory. Theories of God involve supernatural activity, but the laws of logic cannot apply to such activity, so the existence of God cannot be either proved or disproved. From this, it follows that to believe in God is useless: it cannot lead to any verifiable prediction.

We have the freedom to choose.... we have the freedom to believe.... those who do not believe in the existence of God, the devil, demons, possession or anything supernatural will have to learn the hard way. Unfortunately, it may be too late for them when that time arrives. They will have a very difficult time because they never believed in anything in the first place. They will not know what to do when their time arrives....

What do they call it when someone turns an argument into a different argument then tries to refute the replacement argument? Is that valid or a fallacy? Also, there is a "check spelling" button right up there.

atheist don't believe in God period. You must believe in Father, son and the Holy spirit in order to be saved, receive baptism as a symbolic way of dieing to our sins and changing our hearts, upon doing that we must pray to receive the Holy spirit, ask The Lord to come into your life and Heart ask for forgiveness. If you truly want to go to heaven you must shed off all ungodliness, and immoral living, read your Bible pray without ceasing, pray for Understanding of His word and for Jesus to take total control of your life, we are living in the last days now its only going to get worse but the one thing i look forward to is the rapture....when the Lord comes for the Church..I don't know about you but I don't want to be left behind and I'm sure you don't either..if you are someone that is new to what you have to do to be saved send me a note and we can talk OK

I have no belief in the existence of any gods. However, I agree that "non-believer" is a misnomer, because I do believe in the existence of many things. It's mostly the religious people who call us that.
I prefer the term atheist.
