He was 19 and wasn't sure that he wanted to be in the army anymore and he went awol for about 3 weeks, went back and got chaptered out within a month with an "other than honorable discharge" (as I said earlier) . Now, every since he did that he's felt so much pain and guilt and has thought many times about making it right and going back to finish serving his country. It's been almost 4 years since he got out and I was just wondering if anyone knows if it's going to be possible if he wants to go back , he said he has a re-3 code. If anyone can help or give advice please do. Thanks.

It is possible. But it will be very difficult. Start by talking to a recruiter. There are a number of hoops to jump through to re-enlist when you have an RE3 Discharge. First and formost will be to demonstrate a real desire to serve and NOT commit the same offense again.

I'm not sure about his re-3 code but I do know that I got a undesirable discharge. This I had turned over to a General discharge. This was quite easy to do. Even though I didn't want to back in. Now I get all my medical covered and also get a Army pension of 1,200.00 a month.
Write a letter to the dept. of Army, Navy or what ever and ask for a review of his dd.214

It is possible for him to get back in, but its not going to be easy.

An RE-3 code is a Re-enlistment code, the higher the number the harder it is goin to be for him to get back in. Put it this way, my brother has a RE-4. He woul have to be Superman to get back in. Good Luck! P.S. It might be a good idea to choose a different branch.

Wow that's pretty cool, I think I have had them from three years ago. I know I have received some best answers, from obviously before I had spell check, that's a long time ago.

The military will be very reluctant to take him. He will have to show some very good evidence that he has changed and that he will not be more trouble than he is worth.

I think most of the guys I know would prefer to not have someone there who doesn't want to be there.

That being said, he was young, if he wants to rejoin, I'd hope they take him. Good luck.

He should talk to the local recruiter. Or the Officer in charge of
the local reserve unit.

Thank you very much, while you're up.

He did good by getting out. The Army is not the place to be. Tell him to go to college and make something of himself. Good luck.
