It is not discrimination if the department has a written policy against any form of visible tattoo. Some do, some don't. When you join a PD it is not like a regular job, it is a para-military organization and appearances are a large part of it. I know plenty of friends with visible tattoos in uniform and it's okay. Think of it like trying to get a job at NBC as a newscaster with a huge nose ring. Do ya think you'll get it? Wear long sleeve shirts throughout the interview and hiring process and check with the recruiters for the department and ask about their policies.

It depends on the agency. Most agencies do require that you have no visibile tattoos once you wear a uniform. But some agencies are allowing more and more people to wear long sleeve underarmor to hide such visible tattoos. The wrist ones I do see a problem with covering up to an agencies satisfaction, but the sleeve I do not.

it all depends if you want to become a state or local police officer. if you want to become a state officer then you don't want to try it. state police departments like the california highway patrol your not aloud to have (any) tats showing. even if you have tats on your back they may not accept you due to outlook of the job. if you want to become just a local police officer i've seen a few here in california have a few tats showing. if i were i would go to the department that you are applying to and ask them. there is no discrimination aganist people who have tats and who realy wants to become an officer. its ok to have tats that are hidden and above your sleeve. if your still looking at becoming a state officer in the academy the wont accept people with tats. p.s. im a california highway partol cadet so i know these things.

I'm not a cop, but I do have some friends that are, and they work for both city and county departments. Most of them have tattoos, and it doesn't matter. If it's not department policy, you should be able to get the job. Good luck!!

Where I am you have to wear long sleeves if you have a tattoo on your forearm area, They won't not hire you because of it though. Some of our guys were "grandfathered " in before the new rule was passed.

Agency requirements differ so you should check with the agency you want to join, however, I know several officers with substantial visible tattoos.

The agency I work for will hire people who have tattoos so long as they are not patently offensive such as racist tattoos, facial tattoos, most neck tattoos, etc. We currently require tattoos to be covered.

Depends on the department. I guess it really depends on which you want worse, the tats or the job!

many departments have department policy that do not allow visable tattoos.

You may be able to find some departments that dont have rules against it.
