OK my 8 mos old pure bred dumb dawg (shep/lab/husky/terrier cross) it actually very clever...we've had him two or so months and he's got sit...stay...shake a paw and lay down down pat....with or without treats as incentive.
What are some other good ones I can teach him easily?? I don't really want to teach him beg...for obvious reasons...and he is still pretty clumsy to try roll over.

you can teach him to hide his eyes, a totally cute trick, whenever you see him cover his muzzle with his paws say "hide your eyes, good boy!" and give him a treat, after a while, he should associate "hide your eyes" with a treat, and do it on command, you could also use the same technique to teach him to chase his tail. We taught our dog, to do it, people love it!

Here are some of the trick I've taught my dogs:
Fetch
Play dead
Since he knows shake a paw you should also be able to get him to "High five" and "Wave"
Sit up (beg), nothing wrong with this one, just don't let him do it at the table.
Weave through your legs, either standing still or walking
Tip a bottle
Press a button (this is fun with those round lights that you push to turn on)
Ring a bell
Speak
Go to....(his mat, a marker on the floor, whatever)
Spin in a circle (left and right)
Say your prayers (puts feet up on a stool or something and puts his face down between them).
Have fun!

Here's a good one... First teach him to "speak". That part is usually easy and can be done with one handful of Cheetos. But here is the trick. After the dog barks on the command to "speak", get him to "speak" 2+2. He will hear "speak" and start barking. Look him dead in the eye while he barks... then after 4 barks, shift your gaze right or left. He will stop barking when eye contact stops. It looks to observers like he can add... as most people are watching the dog and not your eyes. Its loads of fun. It might take the rest of the bag of Cheetos to accomplish this trick.

Scenting.
You could get him to find things by allowing him to smell an object before you hide it.
great fun for you and your dog.
This can also be very helpful as well, as dogs have a good memory and can remember smells.
my dogs have found my lost car keys on command many times.
Best of luck xx
P.S. sounds as if your dog will become a much loved family member.********

My parents have a couple of their dogs trained to speak on command. That may be something if you are interested.
