When I boot my computer, I have a number of programs loading and minimizing in my taskbar. Once all of the programs are complete, I get a "boom" sound, exactly like the sound you hear when you click on an invalid link or a program that no longer exists. Is there any way to find out what program is trying to load and disable it? I've tried msconfig, but there's nothing selected that I don't want running.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Besides trying msconfig, which is a great suggestion, you could also use a startup manager program, such as Bootmaster at http://www.product-key.com/bootmaster.htm

Starutp managers are usually more full fledged than msconfig because they give you more information about the program.

Even though you may want everything that is in your msconfig to run, you should try disabling them all for one boot and see if it resolves the issue. If it does, recheck them one by one until you find which one is causing the problem. Then you may have to reinstall that program.

You could also try running a registry cleaner (go to download.com and get ccleaner for free). That will remove any dead links or entries in the registry.

Finally, run a couple of anti-spyware programs (download.com again and get Skybot Seek & Destroy and/or Ad-aware SE Personal for free). It may be a spyware that was not totally removed from your PC failing to open a link (thus, the boom). Recommend that you run them in Safe Mode to be the most effective.

run ccleaner, click on issues to find and remove obsolete entries in registry. or use another registry cleaner called regScrubXP

running any one or both of the above programs will sure get rid of the problem you are facing, and you can continue using these programs to assist you in maintaining your computer.

You might try Norton WinDoctor or any of several Registry Cleaning utilities.

Re-loading Windows from the CD or Backup is extreme - but might also fix it.
