It would handicap me for a while until I learned the new language. It would be no different than if I suddenly could not use my right arm. I would have to learn to be a lefty, but it wouldn't ruin my life. I could whine and complain about how unfair it was or what a disadvantage this place on me or I could accept the change as beyond my control and realize I have a brain and I can still think and learn and do the same things I did before only using different words. Plus, becoming bi-lingual would make me a more valued person in many settings. I could become a translator, for example.

I am a Finance/French double major currently studying France. I can tell you that despite completing nearly thirty units of French before I came here, I still struggle to communicate. I can comprehend if they annunciate clearly, but so many people just run all the words together.

I love the language and am relishing this experience, but I can tell you learning a foreign language as an adult is daunting. This experience has been frustrating and rewarding. Imagine going from an articulate person able to express yourself to your heart's content, to a person that has the vocabulary of a child.

Parents: please enroll your children in foreign language classes!
