I asked a similar question yesterday. And I think it only makes sense! The idea is to ensure that the congressperson takes their vows really seriously. He takes the Koran more seriously than the Bible. I'd be more concerned about him *breaking* that vow--too many congresspeople have done it egregriously, after swearing on the poor ol' Bible.

Good for him. If I ever took the oath of office, I'd insist the person held up a Cliff Notes on Physics, Chemistry, and Biology for me to swear upon. If a Cliff Notes could be found on Ethics and/or both Deontology and Utilitarianism, those would be added to the stack too.

As he should. That is his Holy Book, his Truth. An oath on the the Bible would be meaningless to him and invalid.. (I voted for hin)

Even though I'm Christian, I think it makes sense that what is being done here is to show that you are willing to swear before God your ability to carry out your duties. I think God would understand that the Bible would not be the right book for him to use.

I think it would be silly to expect him to swear on a book he doesn't believe in. What kind of oath would that be?

it makes sense given that he's not a christian, how would swearing on something he doesn't believe in make his oath legit?
