Well, you can buy a prepaid credit card, just like a gift card. I saw some American Express cards you can recharge at the grocery store just the other day.
As for the tent. Go to an outdoor store (like REI or Sports Authority), tell them what you are looking for in a tent. Have them show you some models and have them set them up for you.
THEN go check out sierratradingpost.com
You will be happy you did, happy camper!

OK. You can search such top camping websites as R.E.I. and Campmor for the tent you like, then sign up for their paper catalogs, find the item you want, fill out the order form and mail it in along with your check or money order.
For the record, I've used credit card and debit cards online since 1999, for everything, including buying my first computer from a library computer, and have never had any problems with fraud. I'd be more worried using it in a restaurant or leaving it lying around where I work to be copied or stolen. Even if someone were to steal your card number somehow, you can't lose any money because the credit card company will refund any fraudulent charges 100%.

Academy Sports is a good place to shop for tents -- find one of a size that you need that meets your budget, it will be fine. Don't worry about brand, they're all good. "sleeps 3" means three people with No Gear inside the tent. if you really want to camp with 3 in the tent, get one that "sleeps 4", or maybe five. excellent idea for dad's birthday!

I would consider opening up a paypal account then you don't have to use your credit card you can just link to your bank account. Plus they have a buyer protection that will refund your money in the off chance you do get scammed.

You would probably be better off going to a Outdoor store. Bass Bro Shop and Cabelas are great stores.

What about a debit card. It's not a credit card, but most places accept them. I don't use credit cards either...
