I am having one tomorrow. What can I expect after surgery? I want to hear it all. Do not be shy or scared to tell me how it really was. I want to know what to expect. How long will I be bleeding and in pain? I am having this done vaginal and will be awake for it.

I had a vaginal hysterectomy 2 weeks ago last yesterday. I am 26. I was in the hospital for 2 nights. Usually it is only one. But I stayed. They give you a spinal, and your not awake the procedure is about 1 1/2 hours long. You wake up. And I didnt hurt at all at that point. Sometimes they do packing in there if there was bleeding. I didnt have this. I also had these things on my legs, to keep the blood flowing since you dont get out of bed that first night, due to a cathedar. They take it out the next morning. THey give you pain killers and usually torteral IV wise. You stay pretty comfortable. Im in my recovery now. Went back to waitressing last Sunday. And the only real discomfort I have had is when I am riding in the car. I felt like I was getting motion sickness. I didnt bleed after I left the hospital either. Things are going well. :) Good luck. Oh, and I still have my overies. That makes a difference. You would get hormone patches if you have them out.

Well, I didn't have the vaginal hysterectomy and I had a complete one, ovaries, everything. I can tell you that my sex life was changed totally. I have no libido at all. The hot flashes were awful to begin with, but have now calmed down. I got this done 5 years ago after having 2 periods a month, lasting 7 days. Also, because my mother had died of ovarian cancer at age 48. It is nice to not have to put up w/ a period every month though. My bleeding only lasted about 10 days, and the pain was kind of like having a c section, of which I had 3. I hope this helps.

Just make sure the doc is using a camera to see what he's doing. It's inserted in the navel and the instruments are inserted in two tiny incisions on either side. It's called laparascopic surgery and it's the best. In the old days, doctors were working blind doing vaginals and women suffered alot of nerve damage etc.I was on my feet in no time. I was sore around my waist because they cut the tendons supporting the uterus. There isn't much bleeding as the uterus is gone. Hold on to your ovaries if you can. They will continue to function. Either way you may need hormone replacement therapy later. Good luck!

You can be awake for the surgery if they give you a spinal. You may be more comfortable sleeping though. I was awake for fibroid surgery through an abdomonial incision and asleep through my hysterectomy 4 years ago. Mine was done laproscopically and I had a lot of discomfort postop from gas. You can expect to bleed for up to 6 weeks but it may be shorter. Once you are discharged from the hospital you can use vicodan

My mom had one done 3 years ago and from what I can remeber she said she could feel some of it, She was awake for it so they only freeze the lower part of your body and my mom told us that she could feel them pulling when they were stiching her up. and also they will load you up on Tylenol 3's.

Goodluck, I hope everything goes well for you.
