I have had 4 babies and only noticed the loss of my mucous plug just before going into labor with my first baby. The other 3, I did not notice when it came out. It is not always noticeable because it may not come out until you are in active labor or even as late as when the baby is ready to be born. It can also come out gradually or in a large chunk. Each woman and each pregnancy is different. The purpose of the mucous plug is to prevent foreign matter from getting past the cervix and losing it only means that your cervix is changing in preparation for labor. It is not a good indicator of impending labor as it can come out weeks before the baby is born.

You dont always know. Many women lose it while going to the bathroom in the middle of the night and the lights are off and they never see it.

If you do happen to see a slimy mucous looking blob fall out, then you know you lost it.

Its dark colored, brownish blood kinda thing... you will know when you loose it.... it took me a couple days to loose it with my first child, then I didn't have him for another 2 weeks.....

Or it can happen when you are in labor, like when I had my daughter...

I would keep a panty liner on all the time, just in case.......

Your mucus plug is what keeps your fluid in. I didn't lose my until about 15 minutes before he was born. I thought I wet myself. I even apologized to the nurse for peeing on myself, she came over to clean me up and it wasn't pee. Lovely isn't it?!
