My finace purchased me a ring from kay jewerels and it is a leo diamond and I just found out that the band that was orginal on my ring isn't a leo band. I found out that it is just a normal band that there shop inscrible it with the leo signature mark and put the diamond chip in it I thought this was copyright. I found this out because my band was defective and they had to order me another band we I got the new band it was completly different from the one i fell in love with. Then they told me that my orginal band wasnt a true leo band and that the new one is in fact a real leo band, I am very upset. So I would like to know if anyone out there has had this happend to them or if anyone has recently purchased one if they new that kay jewerel could do this

You shouldn't be upset.

The band is NEVER a Leo. Leo refers to the diamond only. Leo Schachter, or his staff, do not make the entire ring. They just cut the diamonds and then distribute them to the diamond stores who will be selling them.

The jeweler then puts the Leo diamond into a setting. Because a Leo is so much more expensive and is a good marketing name, they jeweler inscribes their band with "Leo Signature" or something similiar. This is means that the ring is a Leo diamond. It isn't a Leo band. Yes, this is perfectly legal and does not break any copyrights or trademarks. Besides the "brand name" reason for doing this, this is also a good way to make sure that the Leo rings don't get mixed up with non-Leo rings in the store.

Either you had a dumb salesperson, you confused her about what you were upset about, or you misunderstood what she said. There is no such thing as a Leo band...Leo refers to the diamond only. The band is always the store's (unless you purchase from Leo Schachter directly, of course).

EDIT: It is possible that Leo has changed their policies. When I was considering a Leo diamond a few years back, it was common practice for the jeweler to make the band themselves. Of course, Leo could have said they can't do that anymore since that time.

If I were you, I would go back into that store and complain that you want a band that looks just like the one you purchased. You might have to settle for an identical band that doesn't say "Leo" on the inside (but really, it's on the inside, no one sees it anyway), accept the different band, or perhaps exchange the whole ring for a non-Leo diamond (a low-quality diamond that has a Leo cut is priced similar to a larger, high-quality diamond with a different cut).
