It seems like 20 years ago if you had a flat tire along the side of a roadway; The first or second car to drive by would stop and ask if you need help. Now; you would be lucky to get anybody to stop at all! Of course, being a good samaritain is not something that is the law that we must abide by according to our state. but people used to be alot more polite than what they are now! But I would assume in big cities that you could easily be shot and killed by a stranger! But that has always been the case! You where just as likely to be shot on the East side of L.A. now as you where in 1986! And people seem so stressed out! Although the pace has picked up through the years, most people still work just 40 hrs a week! I can understand why we should be worried about kids however! It is really sad with all of the pedophiles out there as well as other children bringing guns to school!

The world today is just as dangerous as it has always been, but it seems more violent.

When you combine the fact that we now have much more access to information i.e. internet news, and a population boom, and other factors, we perceive the world as a much more colder, distant , and hostlile place. We watch TV and see muggings, murders, mayhem and such.

Don't dare talk to strangers -- You don't know them therefore they are going to attack you

Don't help people -- It's better to be safe then possibly getting attacked!!!!

Strangers = YOUR GOING TO DIE!!!!

Like I said though it is just perception. Can we honestly say the world is less violent than in the 20's and 30's ? Those were the days of Al Capone and liquor running. The Tommy Gun-- the Saint Valentines day massacre.

My father grew up outside of Chicago in the 30's and said that the town would find a car with a body in the trunk every so often. The figured they were mob hits.

People at the time were also much less educated-- only the rich went to college. So society at the time was much more gritty and hard and far more violent.

Pertaining to your question of why is the world not very helpful and nice. I believe it has to do with simply being to many people and if you look at all the people we meet in year, you would find it impossible to learn all their names. So we just gave up and it became normal to just not talk to people, that idea spread to other facets of our lives- like not helping a stranded motorist. I was campinG in the mountains a few years ago when I had car trouble. My party and I had a second vehicle about 20 miles away and we needed a ride to go get it. Luckily the vehicle had broken down at rest area so there were people around, but it took about a hour before we could get anyone to give me a ride. One lady said she doesn't give rides to strangers--I thought to myself -- What piece of crap she is - I'm stranded and in need of help and ----I can't talk about this anymore.

Anyway I go out of my way to help people in need these days-- I remember how that woman made me feel and I don't ever want to see someone else not get something they really need. Especially when it won't cost you anything, but a few minutes.

I'm just as friendly and helpful as I ever was, but I know I am in the minority. I think many people are afraid, it started with the "war on terror" where Bush & Co. made us afraid with the different alerts (red orange yellow) then everyone was suspicious and living in fear. Plus, it seems like a lot more people are just plain paranoid. I don't think this war on terror is helping much.

Too many people. Just like rats in a cage. When they overpopulate the cage they start killing each other. The Earth's human population is over twice that which it can comfortably accommodate and warfare alone won't put a dent in it.

I am a female trucker and alot of us are afraid to stop as there have been many murders where women have posed as broke down, someone stops to help and men will be hiding in the scrubs etc..,nearby and kill or rob the person trying to help.Sad but its true.

I think people it's a combination really, people are afraid to stop and help, and then there are those who just don't care.
My friend stopped and tried to help and older man, the older man was so afraid that he hit him in the head with his cane. My friend ended up needing medical care.

The fear is one both sides, and being polite and caring are being stopped in it's tracks.

Government lives off of fear and creates fear to build it's empire. Let's face it they do a lot better job at instilling fear into people than they do at providing protection. Oh, and the protection they do provide is protecting you from yourself.
