Its normal for retainers to be a bit uncomfortable to begin with. This should settle after a couple of days. The most commonly used retainers these days are the vaccume-formed clear plastic ones. These can be cleaned with a soft toothbrush and cold water. Clean your teeth after meals before replacing the retainers. The retainers themselves should be cleaned morning and night when you brush your teeth.

so , u r using retainers , retainers are meant to aid in the treatment and perhaps avoiding the relapse of the treatment .
u didn't clearly mentioned which sort of retainer ur using , well , any how , retainers can be cleansed in normal water and they have to get cleaned every time u wear , never clean it in warm water or hot water , if there is any food debris adhering to it , u can clean it by using extra soft or soft brush ,but its must that u clean it when ever find some foreign substance on it

You can just rinse the retainers with water. Also you are lucky you have retainers that you can take off while eating. I have permanent expanders on my upper teeths that I have to wear all the time even when I'am eating. Its painful and my tongue gets red and swollen from constantly hitting it with the expanders.

if you can tak them out to eat, you can take them out and give them a good scrub with your toothbrushh a couple of times a day. the discomfort of them is something you have to learn to live with im afraid..the straight teeth in the end are worth the pain though.

You just take them out and brush them when you brush your teeth. Use your toothbrush and regular toothpaste.
