I love dying my hair but am really scared about the cancer related consequences that we keep hearing of.With some henna based hair colours coming from various countries, I worry that they might secretly be using other chemicals and not listing them.Any ideas..?

a henna dye is going to be the closest thing you will find that is all natural. Henna dye is also well known for destroying hair. It doesn't moisturize well and leaves your hair in a pretty brittle state. I would recommend getting a normal dye but make sure it is ammonia free, they make a ton of dyes now without ammonia and it is defiantly the roughest chemical in hair dye.

There are so many miconceptions about henna that I have read here and there are SO many questions people ask. I try to answer them to the best of my ability.
First off henna is not BAD for your hair even if it is chemically dyed. There are many natural hair care communities and forums like longhaircommunity.com and longhaircareforum.com that discuss in length about using henna.
Another thing is henna is a natural plant and one plant can only dye one color: reddish tones. Black henna is usually indigo and neutral henna is usually cassia obovata.
So the market out there puts these boxes on the shelf for you to use on your hair and your body without properly labelling it, and also putting additives to the mix and metallic salts.
The best place to buy henna is from a reliable supplier who sells Body Art Quality (BAQ) henna powder, and imports it themselves.
BAQ henna is pure and very finely sifted and fresh. No chemicals no pesticides just pure powder.
I have many clients ask many questions about henna and if it is free of gluten and free of chemicals and the answer is ALWAYS YES.

So hairdressers are not trained in the field of natural hair care. The market is all about buying chemicals and getting it done at the salon,. The quickest and easiest ways. So that is why hairdressers don't recommend henna because the aren't trained in the different types of henna out there, and so it is better for them just to say don't use it. Because the salon is not about to import loads of henna powder either.

BIGEN hair is very bad for you ! It is a chemical and it is very well known to give skin irritations easily. Just be careful.

The best henna powders are Moroccan and Rajasthani Indian hennas.

I hope this helps.

This is what I do now because I completely fried my hair with bleach.

Use a wash out dye...I use Naturals by Clairol (I believe its clairol)

Permanent dyes will dry out your hair and after awhile kills it, and it's not exactly safe with all the chemicals in it....

the wash out semi permanent 26 washes stuff is amazing, the colour doesn't wash out that much, and when it does, it just starts slowing fading.

Use a kids shampoo, it's way less harsh on hair because it has way less chemicals.

hope this helps!

use products with no ammonia like Clairol. When you go into a beauty store look for hair dyeing products that has no ammonia on the outside of the box and also products that contain conditioners to help your hair rather than harm it. Bigen is also a good hair dye to use.

I do know Herbal Essence Hair Colour is ammonia free. I have used it in the past and didn't mind it. The colour lasts as long as most and it does get great reviews.

Lush do various henna hair colours in their 'Caca' range, all natural ingredients. Takes a bit of time but well worth it. Go to www.lush.co.uk

You can buy over thi internet, or visit one of their shops. However if you go to the shops, you will get carried away and spend loads, or at least I do anyway, the stuff is fab!
