It was a rifle scope, all I paid for was the labor for the installation and a couple of can coozies.

Devil's advocate: Who of you 'honest' people download music illegally?

took it back, they seemed pretty thrilled. I got 20% off the price. The only thing that makes me mad... the kid who sold it to me told me if he was me, he wouldn't have brought it back.

I think it's really up to you.
Clearly, it was their mistake and you've left the store, it's over.
That said, if it were me, I would have said something....just for peace of mind. I hate to carry that guilt with me, I'd think about it all the time, or at least everytime I saw that store or rifle scope.
And to your question about music downloads...I don't.

There is something called "honesty". An employee made a mistake, and the store will come short in their inventory at the end of the month, an employee may get blamed for it, or they will think that they were victim of shoplifting, install expensive cameras, search or suspect all customers and so on. In the end, the store will make for the loss by raising the price on all their gear, and everyone will have to pay more henceforth.
Especially if this is a store you intend to return to later, go back and tell them about their mistake, from now on, you will get the best service anyone can dream of, you will be mister honesty, and that is worth more than you can ever dream.

YES!!!!!!!!! The only thing to say is Honesty is the best policy. If you were at the check out with the item you had every intention of paying for it anyway so why not be honest. The cashiers are human and can make mistakes too. I would feel bad if someone else might have to pay for something I knowingly received without paying for it. It is the same as shoplifting.

We live in a world where Honesty doesn't seem to be a quality people care to have! If you were to loose something that was very important to you, would you not hope that someone who found it, would return it to you? Honesty comes in every shape and form and if you are not willing to be honest with something you feel is as simplistic as this, what makes you believe that anyone around you will be honest with you?
It really doesn't matter what others think of you! It matters what you think of yourself! If you are truly 'Alright', with this you would not have given it another thought! I can't imagine that with so few truly honest people left in this world that you would not want to be above them all and instead of being dishonest and a thief, returning the item to purchase it!
Have a good day!
Blessed Be

There is no question about it, you did the right thing in taking it back. The kid who sold it to you was wrong to tell you that he would not have brought it back. That is simply dishonest at best and criminal at worst. I commend your honesty. You can be proud of your actions in this matter. As for downloading music without paying for it, that is dishonest and I would not do it. I expect to pay for what I get unless it is a present or the giver intends for it to be a freeby. Honesty is rare today. Take pride in your honesty.

yes you should say something, unless you are comfortable stealing something. There is no different in what you did, then if you walked in and put something in your pocket and walked out.
Doesn't matter if it was a little store or a large retailer. In the end we all are going to pay for that item, because they will have to raise their prices to make up for what was lost

That's a question only you can answer for yourself. Many people wouldn't, but I (though I wouldn't like it) would have to say something. If nothing else, my wife wouldn't let me rest at ease until I did. Besides, it would cause shrinkage at the retail outlet which causes the prices of everything for all of us to up. The next time you would need to purchase one, the cost would be $160. Just something to think about...

100% I would be honest and go back and pay what I owe.. The cashier may well get into trouble because the till will be down.. Do the right thing, you were prepared to spend the money so go back and pay what you owe.. Regardless of whether it is a big store or not..

I think that you should.
Honesty is the best policy. A friend of mine had something similar happen to her, and when she told them, they 'sold' it to her for real, but then gave her a huge discount for being so honest. So she was able to get the thing cheaper and also be honest....Hope that you do the right thing!

HELL NO. i was pissed that i had to pay 17 bucks for a CD and 15 bucks for a DVD, and was surprised when it rang up to be 16.00. i checked the receipt and the cashier apparently forgot what she was doing halfway and just put the CD in the bag without scanning it. i didnt say a damn thing and then i told my parents, my brother, my two friends, and some guys at work. i love when people do that.
