Yes,Murugan and Subramanya are the same and he is the god of war according to many Vedic sources.ForTarakasura, who had a boon and cud not be killed, this second son of Shiva was planned by the Suras/Devas to slay Tarakasura.Shiva had to be exited to such a point that he ejaculated and his semen was swallowed by a fish,of which later Murugan was born.Kamadeva, who was instrumental in igniting Shiva's passion, was charred to death by his Third Eye.

yeah all are same, he still have so many names as vadivela, arumuganathan, thirumalaikumaran. he is not the god of war. he came to the word to destroy evils. As you say "skanda shashti" twice a day after bath. No evil can come near you and dare you. And if you read this "skanda shashti" with knowing the meaning is very powerfull. All slogas reading it with the meaning and with bakthi brings you everything you want. You can find more in the following website....
http://murugan.org/
it has all the devoties, slogas, about arupadai vedu etc...
Hope it gives you all.

What is in a name.? We should worship God, alone. He is not born; He does not die. He lives within us as well. He permeates
every atom of this universe.
