It's funny (well, not really) because people go on this diet and think they can go carte blanche on fats/cholesterol, etc.. Even Atkins mentions something about good v. bad fats. However, I totally agree with the previous posts, I do not think it's a healthy diet to be on and is not sustainable on the long term. In fact, weight loss diets are bad news in my book anyway, especially these fad diets that promise quick returns - they almost always never work over time.
Good diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle is the only real tried and true method of weight loss and control.
Sorry to hear about your brother, hope he's ok now. I imagine that's a hard and nasty lesson to learn.

I have never yet met anyone who followed the diet as outlined in the book "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution" who did not have success. That means weight loss and healthier metabolism.
Lots of people are too self-indulgent to lay off the sugar and bread and potatoes. They just use Atkins as an excuse to eat all the butter too.
Lots of ignorant people will tell you "I heard this" or "Somebody told me that" about Atkins. Those people don't even know what the Atkins diet is. They have no business criticising the Atkins diet unless they read the book.
What do you suppose were the condition of your brother's arteries two years ago, before he went on Atkins. Are you thinking that he just filled his arteries 95% in the last two years?
Atkins requires a cholesterol test before going on the diet and another some time after. If you follow the diet, you will find that your cholesterol is reduced on the Atkins diet. There are good reasons for this. You can find them if you read "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution" and "Dr. Atkins Health Revolution".
Dr. Atkins sufferred from a long term heart condition that was not cholesterol related. Anyone who says Atkins died from his diet is simply spouting mean spirited gossip.

I don't believe the Atkin's diet itself had anything to do with it. I have been on the diet for almost 2 years. I've lost over 100 lbs. My cholesterol is only 144. My husband is still on Atkin's and has been for a year and a half. He's lost 91 lbs. His bad cholesterol went way down and his good cholesterol went up. His diabetes is now under control, too. My in laws (my husband's parents
are still doing atkins. My father in law lost 217 lbs in 3 years. He is still on it. He had high cholesterol and a heart attack before he went on the diet. His cholesterol is now normal. His cardiologist
recommended the diet. My mother in law lost 78lbs in 3 years. Her blood work is all normal, too.)
I have heard of some people developing problem while on the diet, but all of the people that I've heard about developing problems did not follow the diet the way they were supposed to.
They didn't take all the vitamins they were supposed too, they ate
more carbs than they were supposed too along with the extra protein and fat. The diet works most people just have a problem sticking with it to the letter.

No, but I advise everyone who mentions going on this diet NOT to, due to heard-of stories like yours about Atkins. It does cause all kinds of health effects and problems, and it's only good for short-term weight loss as well. So it's totally worthless anyway.

My mother put my father on the diet to lose weight, and he never did. All it did was raise his blood pressurer and cholesteral. What do people expect to have happen on this diet when the majority of the food you eat is red meat?

you get what you deserve when you eat a diet that's packed with fat.
i can't believe folks still do this diet...
eat right instead... www.mypyramid.gov
atkins increases lipids and triglycerides.. which are bad for the arteries.
