I was considering going to college(possibly at the school of Visual Arts in NYC) to get a degree in photography. I am wondering if this would be a good decision. Are there any jobs for photographers nowadays? What kind of jobs could I obtain? I could use some advice from some professional photographers. Thanks.

Hey Joe,

You should talk to some one at the Professional Photographers Association. There is a student section, which would be good for you, because you would get contact time with other photographers.

There are most definitely many career possibilities in the field of photography. It all depends on what interests you the most....what makes you get exited to do? there's Wedding, Commercial, Freelancing, Food, Portraiture, Photojournalism, and more......If you are seriously thinking about it, you should consider going to exhibits, and even begin to play with a camera, take pictures of friends and family who are willing to pose for you, pets, food, etc........That is how i began to understand what it is that i liked to photograph and what i would get to frustrated with. Do what you love, that's the important part......but don't go to a very expensive school if you are not completely devoted to photography, you would probably regret it....do your homework, and the answer will come to you. Good Luck!

there are plenty of jobs for freelance photographers and photojournalist. I majored in art for 3 years before I decided that I had to switch my major to something other than art. I do encourage all art students to pursue their career in art but I also suggest that you have a backup plan, IE a minor or a second major to fall back on. The art industry is very uncertain but it can be very rewarding. In the end its just a choice you have to make for yourself.

Well I plan to go to college for photography.

Here is my opinion
If it is something you love and want to make a career out of, go for it.
You can get a MFA and open a gallery or work for one
You can open a studio
You can be a personal photographer
A photojournalist for newspapers and magazines
If you want, go for it. Your school should also be able to get you internships and jobs in your feild
Good luck and enjoy :)
