True celibacy is a gift. Not all have it. I have known hundreds of faithful Roman Catholic Priests who have lived perfectly happy celibate lives. Good men. Holy men. But the vocation of celibacy is not for everybody. I think that too many men believe with all their hearts that they can do it....then - pressures get to them.
I don't think that good Priests who cannot keep the vow are bad men....and I don't think they are driven crazy. I think they just leave the Priesthood.
This is sad to me. So many good vocations to ministry go to waste!

I knew this priest many years ago. Every Friday he drove 200 miles to have sex with a woman. He was a regular, normal guy. They started that celibacy thing during the 14th century. At the time, the hierarchy of the church wanted to save money by not supporting whole families anymore, and they wanted to stop the influence of the women on there husbands. During that time the majority of of the hierarchy where gay, also. Almost all the the canonized saints of that time period where self professed homosexuals. Bottom line, they wanted to alienate these men for total control. So, over the years , pedophiles found it a perfect refuge.

80% of priests and 70% of nuns have had homosexual relationships. This is far above the normal rate.

Wouldn't it do that to you?
Seriously, I think it is. The practice is antiquated.
