hey! i am having a debate with my mom. she thinks that if ur head is big ur super smart. and if ur brain is smaller than somelses u cant b as smart as the person with a big head. i dont think this is true cause my dad has a small head but he is very intelligent. her explantion for this is hes brilliant. i dont think ur head size has anything to do with how smart u r or how smart u can b come. she says that its a scienctific fact, whateva! she also says that we only use so much of our brains. therfore saying if u only use 90% of ur brain that if u have a smaller brain your 90 % is less than someone with a biggr brain. what do u guys think? id also like a sciencetific take on this too. thanx everyone!

When you're dealing with averages your brain weighs about 3 pounds and an extremely large noggin doesn't necessarily indicate superior intelligence.

Intellect however is partially a function of the convolutions of the brain, which provide for more extensive gray matter -- which resides on the cerebral cortex or outermost portion of the brain.

For example, I have one of the biggest heads most people have ever seen -- and I'm just an average joe with average intellect and nothing really beyond that others have in the cranial department.

Utilization of what's available is another matter altogether. I believe 10% utilization of capacity is the normal range.

You really can't objectively determine how much of the capacity of a brain in a particular individual is being utilized because the test mechanisms are inexact and estimates of utilization are subject to interpretation by people.

First off, head size has almost nothing to do with brain size! You actually only use about 10% of your brain, and that is largly due to the fact that your brain is made up of mostly FAT!!! The size of the brain has NOTHING to do with intelligence. And if you want to get right down to it, the bigger your brain is, the more likely it is to be really tight in your skull, thereby inhibiting the circulation and also causing preasure to the brain, whereby effecting your abbility to learn. So no, having a big head doesn't make you smarter, or dumber. The only thing that does effect your inteligence is your own personal ability to be open to other people and your desire to learn! There is no cap amount on how much your brain can store!

its not your head that makes you smart its whats in it. and the brain is made up of a bunch of tiny cells and thats what makes you smart. knowledge and learning is what makes you smart not just having a big head. ask her to not just tell you but show you where she seen it at on the net in a magazine. but i have heard that alot of people only uses portions of there brains i think that part is right but not the rest? this web site talks a little on brain size but not really on head size.oh and isnt your brain supose to get bigger with the more you learn and know but if your an adult and youve stopped growing then you learn alot like going to college does that mean your head is gonna explode cause your brains getting bigger and your head wont expand? lol

No. Head size has absolutely NOTHING to do with how smart a person is. I hope this does not offend anyone, as I dont mean it in a bad way at all - but look at a person with Down Syndrome, their heads are almost always larger than average.

I hate to say it but Mom's wrong.
Head size is determined by bone structure all human brains are between 2.9 lbs and 3.2 lbs. Head size has nothing to do with intelligence.
If Mom was right then the elephant would be a genius.

Now remember she's your mom....so break it to her gently.

The size of your head has no bearing on the size of your brain. Big head may mean lots more room for air -- thus the term airhead! Big head -- big ego!

Bottom line, your intelligence is not linked to the size of your head.

Albert Einstien had a small head. Although your mom is right that we only use a portion of our brains she is wrong to think that brain size effects portion use. look at it this way a lot of mentally retarded people have big heads.

No. People only use 7% of their brain to begin with.

your mum is right about only using a certain amount of your brain's potential, but you are right about the whole 'having a bigger head' makes you smarter' thing!
