Just like the first answer said. "They are offended by people shoving religion down their throat."
Now that's funny. If you don't want to hear about religion, why are you in the R&S category?

I really enjoy reding all this talk on atheism. I believe its more of a big point in society these days. More and more people are realizing that God does infact not exist and that makes me happy. Was God there in 9/11 or was he there when Katrina struck. I guess the devil is winning the fight because God is officialy a joke and more people are understanding that living life off of logic and reasoning can solve many things. I dont see any churches talking about Global warming but instead they preach the same old boring "book" that repeats the same quotes from people we never knew existed.

I'm not offended by god but by the ignorance of the christians who firmly believe he is the answer to anything. Don't they know that Bush has more power than god himself. Well thats if he actullay existed. Stop making fools of yourself and focus on the world and how to stop religion. When we are all nuetral things run better and wars are nonexistent. Just look at switzerland in WWII.!

I have often wondered the same thing. Now there may be a few people who have honestly had a bad experiance suffered at the hands of someone professing Christianity . (Such as a child being abused) But for the most part it doesn't make alot of sense. I no longer believe in Santa, but I don't get angry over it and i don't look for children in the line up at the mall to try and set them straight. Not all are unreasonable but some of the ones that come in here can act like as the word was used "Toadies". I don't suggest atheists can not do good what I do suggest is they are hard pressed to define good or evil. In the absence of an absolute moral standard giver "God", all they have left is what they call common sense. Herein lies the problem. Who is to say one persons common sense is any more correct than anothers. And to offer another correction to disagree with someone, even strongly doesn't make either side guilty of being hateful. Again I do find some reasonable athiests but much of what I read in here is not very well thought out. But I try to be an honest and fair person and in that same vein some christians behaviour can be arrogant and disrespectful.

Atheists are not offended by God, they are offended by the Christians who tell them they are going to hell for not believing in God. They are also offended by the Christians who preach one way and live the opposite way. In doing so, these Christians are saying because the are Christian they will live a better afterlife even if their lives are lived in sin. Atheists do not like hypocrisy and contradictions the religion and its believers purport.

Not offended by make-believe god, am offended by what delusional superstitionists want to do in the name of these fake gods. As long as Christianity, as well as several of the other "ultimate truths", have as their end and gleefully sought after goal, the END OF THE WORLD, and as long as they believe that their rights are being violated if they are denied the opportunity to use the coercive power of the state to shove their god down every ones throat, you will have to put up with us being in your face. Why should we abandon a forum where we can let you know that you will not be allowed to carry out the silly "End Times" rubbish that you seem to forget would include the rest of us.

of course, every answer will be different because the topic is too general (like your generalization of all atheists being "offended" by God). i think some are more offended by the particular threats of Hell and self-righteous usage of God by people than the actual concept of God.

I can't possibly be offended by a mythological being that doesn't exist.

I *can* be offended by ignorant, know-nothing followers of a herd of ignorance who claim "god" tells them what to do, who continually try to tell others that "god" is going to send them to hell (while they're busy taking drugs and seeing prostitutes, and other bad things), who claim they have the "one and only truth" while they have no evidence of any kind to back up their "truth," and by those who ignore and distort science and fact in a vain attempt to "prove" their silly superstitions are real.

Let's take an example that is posted here quite frequently:
"I know god is real."

How do you "know?" Do you even understand what the word "know" means? You have not seen god or heard him (impossible since he doesn't exist), all you have had is some warm fuzzy feeling, usually in a group of people all whipping up emotion. People who say things like that are ignorant of the meaning of words, ignorant of the idea of proof, evidence, or knowledge, and are promoting lies. *That* offends me.

Wouldn't you be offended if someone told you that you were incapable of love or doing anything good for anyone, simply because you do not adhere to their specific religious belief or believe in there specfic God?

You associate yourself with a very hateful fan club.

How can I be offended by something that does not exist?

I'm not offended by your belief in a deity either, so long as you respect your right to have your belief and respect my right to have my belief.

Good question... I dont believe in The Flying Spaghetti Monster or Krishna or Zeus but they dont offend me at all. I wouldnt even care if there were statues of them in public places (I know there are Zeus statues around) or people openly celebrated holidays in their names (so long as there arent any sacrifices made or people injured in any way) so I often wonder this myself.
