There are some rules that are set, and some "customs" that are practiced.

**Mandatory**
1. Fasting (not eating/drinking) from dawn until sunset.

2. Refraining from sexual intercourse from dawn until sunset - from sunset until dawn it is permissible for those who are married.

3. Refraining from gossip, anger, envy, greed, impatience, etc during the entire month - more so than other months (ie the effort is usually stronger)

4. Keeping to the five prayers that are incumbant upon the Muslim every day of the year.

5. Proper Intention of Fasting to please God

**Highly Recommended Practices (according to the way of the Prophet)**
1. Suhoor - having a light meal before commencing with the fast - this happens before the dawn arrives

2. Finishing a complete recitation of the entire Qur'an in that month (or more if you are able)

3. Taraweeh Prayer - There are prayers held only during Ramadhan after the latest prayer in the day - for around 1 1/2 - 2 hours every day. They are not mandatory, but are highly recommended.

4. Increasing worship in the Last ten nights - praying at night, reading more Qur'an, etc

5. Increase in Giving Charity to others

6. Staying in the mosque during the last ten nights to seclude yourself for worship (it can be for even an hour - and up to all ten days)

**Oft Practiced by Choice (you'll find some people prefer to do some other things such as )**

1. Not watching TV or movies
2. Not listening to music (as Islam doesn't allow music outside of drums - though when some choose to listen to it regardless, they'll stop during this month)
3.Wearing clothing that are more modest
4. Not wearing makeup (although makeup should not be worn for the women, when some choose to wear it regardless, during this month, many give it up)
5. Less wasting time

And then there are some practices that people have which are not recommended such as:
1. Overeating
2. Sleeping during the day and waking up during the night - repeating that all over
3. Neglecting to worship God, while thinking they are because they are fasting
4. Wasting time

among other "cultural things"

Anyhow, hope that helps!

Well it is on a different date each year. You have 29,30 depending on the moon days of fasting. We get up before our first pray we eat and drink and then after we pray we don't eat, drink, swear, kiss or do anything that would break our fast. Our fast is broken just before 4 th pray, normally with a few dates and milk. Then after 4th pray we are free to eat until the next morning. At the end of Ramadan we have a celebration called Eid where we all wear new clothes, give gifts and money to children, go to Mosque and then have a celebratory meal in the evening with family and friends. Its a wonderful holiday. I hope this answer your question.

PADWINLEARNER we pray 5 times a day every day of the year not only in ramadam......

may be you meant ramadan!! if that's the case well here's some answers for you.
The fourth pillar of Islam which is fasting is also called and it is the ninth month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar, blessed and spiritually-beneficial month of the Islamic year. Prayers, fasting, charity, and self-accountability are especially stressed at this time; religious observances associated with Ramadan are kept throughout the month. God prescribes daily fasting for all able, adult Muslims during the whole month of Ramadan, beginning with the sighting of the new moon..

It is also during this month that we read the Quran in it's entirety, and we go without sex (for those of us married), food, water, sexy images, cigarettes, from the time the sun rises until it sets.

If a woman has her period in this month she does not have to fast during her period.
