5. Fill the empty 8l-jar with water from the 12l-jar -
1l left in the 12l-jar, 8l-jar is full (with 8l :), 3l in the 5l-jar still
6. Pour 2l from the 8l-jar into the 5l-jar - this is easy, you just have to fill the 5l-jar :) -
1l in the 12l-jar, 6l are left in the 8l-jar, 5l in the 5l-jar

Fill up the 8 litre jar and pour the water into the 5 litre jar till its full...u have 3 litre left in the 8 litre jar put that to the side and do the same thing again! 3 litre + 3 litre = 6litre which is half of 12!

1. fill the 8 litre container with water
2. pour that water into the 5 litre container, which leaves 3 litres in the 8 litre container
3. next, empty the 5 litre container and transfer the 3 litres into it
4. fill the 8 litre container with water, again, and then empty the 12 litre jar
5. now, place the 3 litres (that were in the 5 litre container) into the 12 litre jar
6. fill the 5 litre container with water from the 8 litre container (which will leave you with 3 litres in the 8 litre container)
7. place the 3 litres into the jar with the other 3 litres and dispose of the water in the 5 litre container
You will now have 6 measured litres of water in the jar!

You fill the 8 litre jar and pour it into the 5. It remains 3 in the 8. Pour away the contents of the Five and reapeat the procedure. you get 6 litres in the 8. i.e. 3+3=6. there was something like this in Bruce willis's 'Die Hard'.
