My 3 yr old daghter has very bad breath. It started all of a sudden about a week ago. I brush her teeth twice a day (now like three) since she had them, she has beautiful white teeth. We brush tongue too. I even floss her about once a week and she uses mothwash but it just doesn't work, about ten min after brushing the breath is back. I think it's not her teeth but her stomach. Anybody has any experiences with this?

P.S. She doesn't eat too much sweets, but she does eat a lot of protein. I thoght that might be it so I tried to cut down on protein in her diet last couple days but nothing changed :-((

My son has a sinus problem which causes his bad breath. If the nasal passage is block or allergies are affecting her breathing this could be the reason for the problem. I have my son use a nasal spray every morning and at night before he goes to bed also try using a humidifier in her room, the air may be to dry in there.

I think you should either take your child to the pediatrician or ask your dentist.

I also agree with peaceful215 - it could be a nasal thing.

Some halitosis in children is due to other underlying causes, and if there is anything at all unusual about the odor that is being noted, a visit to a physician or dentist may be in order. Some diseases cause an off-odor on the breath and when such a disease is involved, only treatment of the underlying problem will cure halitosis in children or anyone else. Some of the diseases involved are serious: diabetes, kidney disease, and malignancy are all potentially life threatening.

If the problem seems like a simple ordinary case of halitosis in children – a rotten egg smell on the breath that is associated with the mouth – the problem should still be dealt with promptly. Although bad breath is not life threatening in the same way that cancer or diabetes is, the social difficulties that are caused by really bad breath can severely affect a child’s quality of life. A cure for halitosis in children could be the same as giving them back their friends.

Have your doctor check her out. Bad breath can sometimes be the result of intestinal problems. It's a different kind of 'bad' breath though, not like stale mouth. If your doc finds nothing wrong, have your dentist check her out. A 3 year old should be seen by a dentist regularly, just like you. Actually your child should see your dentist as soon as she's mature enough to handle the visit. You can't always see a dental problem. She could have a periodontal condition needing treatment or decay not easily seen just by looking from your perspective.

Besides an infection, stomach upset, post nasal drain, reaction a medicine it could be a sign of diabetes even if she is not overweight. IF that is the issue, the inability to process sugar causes one to have a dry mouth/rusty metal smell. You should really have a good smell to see what it smells more like and it could help a physician to better disgnose it.

Does it smell like?

1) Rotten eggs?
2) Garbage?
3) Dry-mouth/bologna sandwich smell
4) No particular smell but just bad
5) Like feces
6) Like urine
7) Like sweet garbage?

It could be her throat. If her tonsils are infected or enlarged, they can harbor bacteria that causes bad breath. Also, I know this sounds odd, but is it possible she stuck something way up her nose? I know of a little girl that stuck something so far up her nose that it was causing constant infections and bad breath. The Dr didn't find it for months and it had to be surgically removed. And would you believe it was a wadded up piece of tape? Anyway...I would take her to the Dr to be checked out. Certainly wouldn't hurt!! Good luck!

I would get a tongue scraper. the bacteria does not come off by brushing the tongue. Its does not hurt. Scrape her tongue 3x a day and you will notice an improvemnt. I had the same problem with my son.

It could very well be the meat. Meat sort of sits in the intestines and forments. It's actually disgusting. She needs more grains and vegetables.

Take her to her dentist. Bad Breath can be a sign of certain diseases, and your dentist will be able to help identfy the cause.
