Hello

In order to have an established handicap in golf you must be a member of a club. This does not mean you must join a golf club as a member for playing, there are many places that you can input scores and get a handicap.

Most courses charge anywhere from 15 to 25 dollars to allow you to use their system to input your scores.

Overall the USGA uses your last 20 scores for handicaping and only uses the lowest 10 out of the most recent 20 contrary to where some would say you average all your scores, which is not true.

You have been given the means to compute your handicap in earlier answers so I wont go there but I would remind you that if you compute your own handicap it will not be useable for local tournements since it is not sanctioned by the USGA (United States Gold Association) .

A basic way is how many strokes you average over par. But some courses are harder than others and if you shoot the same score on one course and the same on a harder course, your handicap will be lower.

The real, complex way is:

* STEP 1: Take the scores from the last five rounds (18 holes each) that you played.

* STEP 2: Look up the rating and slope for the course that you played for each of these scores. This information is usually printed on the scorecard, although you can also get the rating and slope by calling the course.

* STEP 3: Subtract the course rating from the score you earned on that course.

* STEP 4: Multiply that number by 113.

* STEP 5: Divide that number by the slope of the course. This number is the differential.

* STEP 6: Take the lowest of your five differentials and multiply it by 0.96, and you have your handicap.

TIPS & WARNINGS:

* If you have more than five scores, you will need to use a slightly different calculation. If you have seven scores, average your two lowest differentials and then multiply by 0.96. If you have eight scores, you take your two lowest differentials and multiply by 0.96. If you have nine scores, average the three lowest differentials and multiply the result by 0.96 to get your handicap.

* The above formula holds until you get to 20 scores. Once you have 20 or more scores, use the most recent 20 scores and average the 10 lowest differentials, multiplying the result by 0.96 to calculate your handicap.

* As you may have figured out from the above, recalculating your handicap every time you play can be time-consuming and annoying. There are several Web sites and software packages that will do the leg work for you.

* This handicap calculation is only an estimate. Official United States Golf Association (USGA) handicaps can only be given out by authorized USGA clubs - no online services offer official USGA handicaps.

Hope this helps.

Your handicap measures how well you'd stand up to a "scratch" golfer on any given course and allows golfers of different abilities to compete fairly.

You develop handicap by joining a mens club at a golf course.
You have to play at least ten rounds of golf and punch it in to a computer it average you're scores in relation to the course difficulty. the course difficulty depends on tees you played and slope rating. let say course b par is 72 the slope rating is -2 or 70 this means the course is easier and par is really 70 in relation to your handicap cap on course b par is 72 but slop is + 1 this course is harder and par is 73 related to your handicap. If you shoot a 75 on a par 72 with a slope of +3 youre hanicap is scratch for that round. If you play the same course it wont vary what you shoot is what you shoot I hope this makes sense, ps dont cheat.

They go by how many strokes over par you are on 18 holes.
If you shoot an 80 and par is 72, then you have an 8 handicap. It is averaged each time you complete a round.
If you shoot par golf, then you are considered a "scratch" golfer and you don't have a handicap.

On a 18 hole course, you are permitted to strike 72 times to complete the course. The number of extra strokes you take to complete the course, becomes your handicap in that game. When you play a large number of times your average handicap on the course becomes known. Similarly, handicaps are also calculated on particular holes, on the course.

Everybody's close but "Arnold H" has got it dead bang on!! Yahoo sports home page has a handicap tracker on it. I use it along with the usga handicap system and they've always been within 2/10ths of each other.

your handicap is determinded by 80%of your average score. If you shoot 80 normally on a par 72 course, your handicap would be 6.4
