I've already answered this question.. but here is part of what I wrote before:

"There are good dogs and bad dogs in every breed, American Pit Bull Terriers (which is the actual breed; pitbull is a broad term that is wrongly applied to many bully breeds) included.

Did you know that APBTs score 83.5% on ATTS (American Temperment Test Society) tests? Compared that to the Dalmatian's 81.6% and the Collie's 79.0%.

While APBTs do need special socialization with other dogs due to being bred for dog fights in the past (and unfortunately still are in some places), they are actually incredibly good with people. This is because dog fighters needed to be able to be able to handle their dog without being bitten, even while the dog was in a very agitated state while fighting. This is not to say that you won't come across aggressive APBTs. You will always have people who breed irresponsibly and fail to socialize their dogs. The same thing occurs with Labs, Goldens, and pretty much every other breed.

APBTs have served in the military and also perform as service dogs. Alaska's first certified hearing dog was an APBT."

Every dog, regardless of breed or disposition, should be supervised when they are with children to prevent tragedies such as the one that occurred where you live. :-(

Oh, and WellTraveled: APBTs were bred for dog-dog aggression, NOT aggression towards humans.

Edit: Also, let me emphasize that yes, there is an issue with people breeding these dogs irresponsibly, which is creating genetically dangerous dogs. This is not the dogs' fault, however. A well bred pittie is a wonderful dog, but people have corrupted the breed. I think rather than ban APBTs, we would do well to place regulations on breeding of them. People should be required to temperment and health testing before breeding, which a responsible breeder would do anyway.

HEEELLLLOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
I own two pitbulls and they are the absolute best!!! To own a pitbull is to love a pitbull!! That is my motto!! They are the most affectionate, smart, funny, loaded with personality dogs I have ever dealt with.

Everyone I talk to who owns a pitbull has nothing but good and positive things to say. I have never met anyone who owned one of these dogs and they did not like the dog or had a problem with their dog. SERIOUSLY!! They are lovable and deserve to be in good caring homes with good caring people.

This is not a mean vicious aggressive breed. People really need to calm down and look at some of these other breeds out here that have attacked and killed people. If a pitbull does something wrong, it is all over the TV. The media has blown this way out of proportion!! It sells and it gets attention.

When I got my first pit, I was already in love with him. I socialized my puppy, took him for rides in my car, had him around my grandchildren, etc. My mother loves both of my dogs and they love her! Zacheri is now 3 yrs old and is a big, beautiful, muscular "cupcake". He loves people and he adores the children.
My girl pit is still puppyish but she is beautiful and loves children and they are both family raised dogs. My dogs live in the house. They go out to do their business and right back into the house they come. Zacheri, especially, will stay outside. He acts like he cannot take any kind of weather unless we are out there with him. He loves being with people.

Pitbulls love humans!!

People make these dogs mean as with any other breed. Poodles are mean!! Chihuahua's are mean!! Dalmations are crazy!! I mean we can find something in every breed.

Pits are not meant for just anyone to have. You may not can be a pitbull owner, so don't get one. Some people don't deserve a pet rat, so please don't get a dog and especially a pitbull!!

When they fall into the wrong hands, it is going to mean trouble but mainly trouble for the dog. They can get mistreated in some of the most awful ways imaginable. These dogs are always the victims of poor ownership when things go bad. I say put bad owners in JAIL!!

When you read about attacks from a pitbull, believe me they are not telling the whole story. They are only going to tell you part of it. Was the dogs being abused? Had someone been teasing the dogs sometime along the way? Were they being fed properly? Had they been socialized ? What kind of people owned the dogs?
There are many many questions that need to answered and the public should be able to hear the answers to some of these questions. When you find out what really happened, you might change your feelings on how you THINK you feel about pitbulls.

Once I got my pit, I fell in love with the whole breed. They don't don't deserve the false hysteria that surrounds them.

ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION:
NO, PITBULLS ARE NOT BAD OR REALLY BAD!! OWNERS WHO DON'T KNOW HOW TO RAISE OR TRAIN THEM AND NEGLECT AND TREAT THEM WRONG - THAT'S WHO IS BAD!!
ALL IT TAKES IS: "LOVE, FOOD, WATER, ATTENTION, TRAINING, SOCIALIZING, & LOVING HUMANS"

Now this is just a nice can of worms.
The answere is No. Pit Bulls are not bad. No dog is born bad.It is a combination of the training he recieves, the owner and his enviroment.I have owned these dogs since 1985.I have raised children with these dogs. And i can assure you, they are NOT bad dogs.A pit bull is no different than Any dog when it comes to a child. A dog is an animal. And any good parent will not leave their child alone with an animal.Would you leave a toddler in a room with a loaded gun on the table? The gun by itself wont hurt the child.BUT,if the child gets his hands on the gun, well then, thats a different story.
Pit Bulls are Terriers, which give them a strong prey drive. They are animal agressive by nature.NOT human agressive
Pit Bulls were originally bred as bull and bear baiting dogs.(Sport) Then when bull and bear baiting was stopped, people took these dogs to out of the way places and fought them for sport. These dogs ARE NOT bred to be human agressive.Even back then the dog handler had to be able to controll his dog.If these dogs were human agressive, wouldn't they have attacked the handler that was fighting them?
There is alot of Myth and untruths that surround this breed. And people that have never owned one are usually the first ones to try to give you advice about them.
If you would like more information and history on this breed then please visit my web site. There you will find The History,Legends, Myths and facts uncovered. And i will be happy to answere any questions you may have.

Not all deadly attacks are done by pit bulls. They are just the ones that you hear about. Pit bulls might as well be born with a target on their heads and they have a very bad reputation that is not warranted. The media distorts the public's image of these dogs through the stories that it reports (blown out of porportion most of the time). If a mean chihuahua bit the neighbors' kid, do you think that the news people would be in the owner's front yard with cameras? No. Why? Because the chihuahua weighs 2 lbs. and their bite can barely break the skin.

Pit bulls (mind you that label can cover any of several breeds) were bred to be larger, muscular dogs with very stong jaws, and for that reason, they are the creme de la creme for dog fighters and those that WANT human and animal agressive dogs. But in all of that, they're getting a lot of negative attention and they're being shown in a terrible light.

10 years ago, the "bully breed" in the news was Dobermans, and before that it was Rotties, then German Shepards. With the new found BSL laws, imagine if they'd been banned too. We'd slowly be driving our domesticated pups into extinction one breed at a time as soon as one showed any agression.

I love and feed my pit bull, and she's the best dog in the world (read: spoiled brat). In my opinion, the "pit bull" breeds are wonderful, energetic dogs, and how you harness and focus that energy directly relates to how your dog will turn out. Granted some dogs do require strict training, but people should choose a dog according to their experience and lifestyle. We do have certain "rules," if you will, with our dog to avoid any misconception of actions from others. For instance, when we're playing with her (mostly rough-housing), we are very careful NOT to hit or wave our hands in her face, especially when she was young, so that she didn't associate that motion with anything negative. Now, my 2 year old nephew inadvertently smacks my dog int he face and she just kisses him to death!

All of these things, I think, relate to why you have the view that you have of pit bulls. Pit bull puppies are just as innocent and ignorant as a newborn child. If you raise a high-strung, energetic child the wrong way, he/she will grow up with ill-fated tendancies as well. Agression is taught. It is not instinct.

I hope that their bad wrap will pass in time like the "bad dogs" of past years. People should know that pit bulls are great companions and not killing machines.

You are sadly misguided which is a big shame for all critters.
If someones mind can be so altered as to think it is a dogs fault for how it has been bred and raised makes me think no wonder we have to put thousands of dogs to death in this country weekly if not daily.
It used to be German Shepherds (yes people were scared to death of these dogs) people thought this about, then Rotty, now Pit Bulls. It is amazing how people are influenced by all the bad publicity in the news.....
Back yard breeders are also to be blamed for this, and according to the university of Pennsylvania (a documentary we watch just last night) dog breeders in general are to be blamed for all the over breeding and in breeding going on in the country...
Little rascals TV program, what a cute cast of kids. And that dog was so cute!! That is a pit bull for you!! Go look it up if you do not believe me, Staffordshire terrier (there real name).
So before a person discriminates against a whole breed of critter lets put the blame where it goes, onto human beings...

Nothing is "wrong" with the dogs.

It's the owners.

And the parents.

No toddler should be left alone with any dog, any breed, any time.

Pitbulls, as well as any other breed, need leadership, obedience training, and supervision.

"Most deadly attacks" can also be attributed to the vast number of pitbulls in the population. They are the most over bred dog today. So...with more individuals of one breed in the canine population, it stands to reason there are "more" attacks by that breed than any other.

Add into that that new owners of any breed don't fully research the breed they are getting and how to handle that breeds temperment, training, and other needs, you have a recipe for disaster.

Pit bulls are not bad. If a pit bull attacks - look to the owner, not the dog. Pit Bulls are bred for strength and aggression.
If a chihuahua bites, it does little harm, and so it's not seen as an issue. If a pit bull bites, the potential for serious injury is much greater. That doesn't make the breed bad, just specific in it's needs.

Careful attention to training is extremey important.
Pit Bulls are not really suitable for a family with young children.

No toddler should EVER be left alone with any dog.

Pitbulls aren't bad! 99% of pitbulls in the world are loving, caring dogs. A golden retriever can be deadly too given the right circumstances. Pitbulls are bred by evil people for fighting. Naturally these dogs are shy and submissive. These evil people feed on that submissiveness and place them in situations where they must defend themselves. When you beat a dog, treat it cruelly, deprive it of food, and train it to be agressive, you will end up with a deadly dog. This is true no matter what breed...pitbulls are just the most common because of their natural tendencies of being submissive.

I love kids, but I will be smart enough to explain the dangers of dogs to them. Kids can often be perceived as a threat to a dog who is not used to them (again this is regardless of the breed of dog). This is why socialization is so important! The more things a dog is exposed to as a puppy, the less likely it will perceive things like children, other dogs, strangers, etc as threats where they have to protect themselves, their owners and their home.

I have a german shepherd and pit bull mix and my dad's cocker spaniel would kick her butt in a fight!

no, they are not bad. They have a reputation for being bad that attracts stupid and irresponsible owners.

The breed requires training. They need to be properly socialized to make sure that they know who is boss, etc. People that just want a scary looking dog buy pitbulls and never spend the time to make sure the dog is safe, trained, and obedient.

Also, the breed responsible for the most deaths is still the rottweiler, I believe, though I have owned rottweilers and am a huge fan. They are also a wonderful breed.

There are no bad dogs, only bad owners! A dog is only vicious when no one has taught him to be nice!

no and it makes me mad that people say they are. ive owned 3. and im owning one right now. mine loves people. he has never tried to bite one. mine also loves animals but out of all the animals he loves dogs more. he loves to play with them. and my dog loves kids. he lets my baby sister who is 1 1/2 yrs old and she sits on him and hit him and pull on his ears. he LOVES everthing. i dont think that people have seen ever single pit bull on earth not all are mean. people are mostliky to get bite buy small dogs more than bigger. other dogs are worser than pits. like GSD, Dalmations, Rotts. its the owners who treat the dogs this way. believe me.

Pit bulls need our love, not our hate. The breed bands dont just effect pit bulls but ALL dogs. the breed band wont stop all dogs from attacking. If pit bulls are banned, then another breed will be in the headline, and when that breed is banned another breed will take its place. Till there are no dogs left. All dogs can bite. All dogs can kill.
Breed bands are not the answer. All dog owners should be responsible no matter the breed.
