I had chicken pox twice. The second time they weren't as bad. Then in my 20's I got the shingles (a form of chicken pox). Hopefully I'm done with all of it.

Chicken pox is caused by a virus known as 'varicella-zoster'. This virus causes BOTH chicken pox and shingles. The main difference is age. If you are exposed to this virus at a young age, you typically have a benign course that results with elimination of the virus. If you have a mild case, or one when you are very young (usually before 4), you may be prone to getting chicken pox again. However, if your initial exposure if when you are an adult, you will get the shingles version, which you will never be rid of. In this case, the virus remains latent in nerves, and when you are stressed out or your immunity goes down, it will pop back up.

A quick differentiation between the chicken pox and shingles is that chicken pox tend to be distributed uniformly over the body, whereas shingles tend to be localized to the skin over the infected nerve.

Are you sure you have chicken pox and not shingles. Shingles are alot like chicken pox but you can continue to get them the rest of your life. My brother has had shingles a few times.

You can have it a maximum of 2 times. Any more than that, you either didn't have chicken pox one of those times (it was some other viral illness), or you have an immunodeficiency.

You can only get chicken pox once. You can get shingles which is similar and called "adult chicken pox" But as far as having the same chicken pox strand, it doesnt happen...

Actually, once you get it, you are supposed to be immune from it. But, in some cases, if you don't get it really bad the first time, you can get it multiple times because you immune system won't block it now. The older you get the more dangerous it is. If you are old enough, it CAN kill, so as you get older (since you've already had it three times) I'd recomend staying as far away from people with it as possible!

They claim that you only get it once and then are immune for life. This isn't so. I had it twice when i was younger. The first outbreak wasn't that bad but after it cleared, a few weeks later i got it again, this time it was really bad. after about 3 weeks, i cleared up and haven't gotten it since. I think in order for you to become immune from getting it, then you have to have a severe breakout of it. I was covered head to toe :(

My daughter has them for the fourth time at the moment. The first time was a normal case, the second, third and now fourth have been mild cases where she dosen't feel unwell, just has the spots. Doctor says highly unusual and has sent her for blood tests cause he says there could be other issues related to it. Eek, totally scared, but hope it is nothing serious..
