It's safe if you do it right.
If you're buying: Check feedback before you bid! Also check payment terms and shipping costs before you bid. Don't buy from anyone who uses up their space threatening deadbeats and ranting. Don't buy from someone with a sob story because that person will probably screw up the shipping. Report anyone who tries to get you to buy off-eBay. Designer brand names are always fake unless the price is high. Use Paypal or money order so the seller never sees your account numbers.
If you're selling, clearly and politely state all of your policies, llike returns and how quick they have to pay. describe everything right down to the tiniest little mousebite. "buyer beware" does not apply on eBay, so you really need to disclose everything. Oh, and if you list your item for 99 cents? It will sell for 99 cents. Start the bidding at the price you really need to get.
Ebay's great because you get to show your stuff to a whole bunch of people who wouldn't know about it otherwise, and also you can find just about anything.

Don't give the seller your info. Go through paypal. It's secure, transfers are direct from you to the seller (or buyer to you) and they don't see your info besides your address and name and what you paid. I'm an avid e-bay user. I NEVER Buy from someone who wants cash only. Those kinda deals can go bad for many reasons. Same with people who want only cheque or money orders. ALWAYS read the sellers reviews. Make sure they are doing a good job. Be wary of first time sellers, though it is rare they can scam you (I'm not saying don't buy from them, just play it safe). Alwasy feel free to contact the seller when you have aditional questions.

Yes it is as safe as any form of buying and selling can be, and no you ought not to give your bank account details to anybody!
My advice is to join PayPal which facilitates selling and buying, especially internationally, and which also helps to prevent fraud.
I have been trading on eBay for a number of years, and have found it remarkably safe and reliable.

Payments should only be made through Paypal-which is a secure payment service. Paypal will have your bank details-and will not pass them on to any other party.
I've bought quite a few things with ebay, and never had a problem.

You Should NEVER give away your bank details....
You don't need to and Ebay tell you not to.
Carry out all transactions via cheque or paypal...Paypal is safer as you get money back if the goods fail to arrive (sometimes)
I've done lots of transactsions...only 1 bad one

Paypal is safe. As far as Ebay goes, you aren't buying anything from Ebay itself so it's hard to tell. It all depends on who you're buying from (or selling to!)! Remember that you have NO idea who they are or if they are telling the truth.
