I let the seasons dictate. Dark is good in cold months, light in the summertime. (and "extra-light" if you want to avoid the gut!)

An honest answer... BEER! Lights seem to be more summer beers and dark for winter ales. Living in the northwest, there are so many micro brews, its hard to decide.... Don't stick to just one type of beer. If you are at a restaurant, as for a sample shot of the beer if it is on tap. Both seem to do their job well. Some micro brews are stronger in % than regular beers, so you might only be able to order a few of them. My opinion and my own taste is something that isn't to hoppy. I drink darks and lights, but it seems that the darks are hard to drink as fast as the lights.

Dark beer is great for those who enjoy the taste of heavier beers. Dark beer is for any time of the year too. Keep the gut off by limiting the amount you drink and exercise. Light beer is like water, very little taste, easy to drink, and hard for me to enjoy. If you are going to spend money then buy a beer with a little flavor. Go dark!

light beers are like sex in a canoe, and most other factory beers are pretty lame as well.
Micro brews are best. If you must drink a factory beer, anything by Sam Adams is the way to go.

German brewed dark beer. I hate the dark stuff altogether, but I tried this stuff when vacationing in North Carolina and its the best. Was made at a brewery called The Weeping Radish. I highly sugget you go there if you get the chance.

Light beer. I've tried darker beers and gagged. Even on Guinness. I guess I just don't have the taste buds for dark beers.

hi there; I do know at some places that brew their own beer they have what they call a sample tray; this is set up with different types of beer that was brewed on their premises and the bar tender will explain what beer is what ( they should do this)Or you could go to a local pub that serves specialty beers and ask the bar tender what they would suggest..Good Luck
