Tetanus spores are present in animal dung and soil. Tetanus is caused by infection of a dirty wound contaminated by soil and presence of dead tissue in a wound,. A contaminated wound may be small, like a thorn prick. Piercing the ears with an unsterilized instrument and ear infection with a perforated ear drum can also lead to tetanus. In infants, cutting the umbilical cord with an unsterile blade or knife and infection of the stump can lead to tetanus. Tetanus is more common at extremes of age. It is a vaccine preventible disease.

Tetanus is caused by Clostridium tetani bacteria, it is not caused by a rusty nail unless it is contaminated by the bacterium. However the bacteria is found in soil as well as in the intestinal flora of animals and humans. It is spread by getting in an open wound or break in the skin.

I think you get it from stepping on a rusty nail, at least that's the story I heard when I was a kid. The wound then gets infected and your jaws lock closed and you starve to death. I am not sure if that is made up because I have never heard of anyone having that happen to me

it is spread through bodily fluids, so if infected saliva gets into a cut or other opening on a person they will get infected. That's why you should get a shot if you are bitten by an animal and it breaks the skin.
