Flattery is nice unless honesty would keep me from being embarrassed by something. So I guess my answer is flattery unless I really need the honesty.

I would much prefer honesty. I'd rather have one person honestly tell me (in a kind way) that the dress I'm wearing makes me look washed out than have fifty people gush about how great I look in a color that does nothing for me.
