My daughter is 9mths. My goal is to teach her both english and spanish. I know she will have to speak spanish by the time she grows up. Any good books, tapes, movies, etc to help me with this? I can not speak spanish myself but willing to learn along with her. Right now we watch Dora, Handy Manny, etc and have a Baby Einstien DVD she watches in both languages.

to answer your ?? Mike - have you ever called the bank, the US government, etc? The first thing they say is 'Push 1 for English, 2 for Spanish'. I've heard they are trying to make SPANISH the official lang of Florida!

You're on the right track. Since she is just a baby now you want to keep it as simple as Dora. Since you want to teach it to her and are willing to learn it yourself, learn ahead of her. Get the tapes and things and learn it yourself.( try www.Rossettastone.com) to know if she's actually learning, try having Spanish day's when you know the language better. try to just use Spanish the whole day and see if she gets it or has no idea what you're saying. (a lot of people use this technique, and it is recommended to students learning sign language.) Have her repeat the word's back to you, and whole sentences when she's ready. Some children get it so quick, they ask for aqua instead of water without thinking. you'll do fine, any more questions and I'll be happy to answer, or just ASK!

YOU ARE BORN AT THE RIGHT TIME!!
Normally I am a little hesitant recommending 'the electric baby sitter' (TV) but there is a wealth of very good pre-school TV shows on Univision and PBS. There is so much bilingual television in just Sesame Street alone. Check out what's available at Blockbuster, Heck, check YOU Tube.com!!!

Uh. . .Why are you so sure that she will 'need' to speak Spanish when she grows up? not that its a bad idea, its very good, its just something I had not considered. If anything I think Mandarin or Arabic would be more appropriate, (rising economies=rising opportunities!)

I do know that for babies to learn another language one of the parents have to be fluent in it, and speak to the baby in that language only. If you are not fluent all you are gonna do is confuse her. My advice here would be let her be more vocal in her native language (english) and around 2 you can start introducing words in another language. I am latin for instance, I live in South America, everyone here speaks spanish though I am fluent in english, my 1st plan was to speak in english to my daughter all the time, but it got so hard because I found myself constantly speaking to her in spanish (my native language) and often forgot speaking to her in english. So I just gave up, allowed her to master spanish and now she is 3,5 yrs old and can have a small conversation in english, knows colors, numbers, shapes and some animal names, etc. I started really teaching her when she was around 2 and already speaking good in spanish.
