I am looking for a free website where I can find where my last name comes from. I have no contact wiith my father's side of the family and I am unsure about my heritage. Does anyone know of a website?

Search on Google you will find great sites although some may charge try search for "free" heritage background

I'd probably say Russian... But why are you so desperate to figure out your heritage? You're American now. And a person's a person- no one cares about their background.

If it's an unusual, or foreign name you can do it yourself; google and google until you get close, then go into the "suspect" country's white pages! That's how I found the origin of a funny surname way back in my grandmother's line. I found not only the country but the very town!!

If it's a common name, it's usually harder, most genealogy sites charge for their services.

Put Allen County Indiana Public Libary in your search engine, they have the largest, most complete records in the country.

From rootsweb.com you can print blank family information sheets. so you can fill in information as you gather it.
Also if you know where yoru family lived you can search rootsweb too.. it's all free.

geneology.com helped me find out about my dad's family and all we had was his dad's first and last name.
