My husband wants one for Christmas. Does anyone have any advice on what to look for or good brands to check out?

Remember that today's DVD recorder will only be good for off-the-air recording until Feb 2009 when HDTV takes over.

I'd suggest to not get a very fancy one with a hard drive and DVD recorder, because you'll lose that much more money in about 2 years.

In general, the name-brand standalone recorders have better electronics and better pictures than the DVD/VCR combinations. Typically, the standalone recorders offer 12-bit video signal conversion and the combos offer 10-bit; more bits are better (in general).

Make sure it can record on as many different types of DVDs as possible so if there's a technology shake out, you don't get caught holding an unusable recorder.

I just discovered that the Panasonic DMR-ES20 I own can't deal with multiple weekly recordings. When you try to record a program every Monday and another program every Tuesday, it won't record a program if there isn't enough room on the DVD for BOTH recordings. So, if you tried to record hour-long programs on Monday and Tuesday in the SP mode (2 hours / DVD), the Tuesday program would never get recorded because there would only be 1 hour left on the DVD and the recorder doesn't start because it thinks it needs room for the Tuesday and NEXT Monday recordings. Panasonic isn't going to fix it (so far) even though my VCR from 20 years ago could do this without any problem.

If you don't care about that, it's been a good recorder for tape to DVD or off-air to DVD.

The more cost-effective DVD recorders are not that top priced and are extraordinarily a lot the version between tapes and CDs. With a DVD Recorder you may genuinely initiate from the starting up of a custom as a replace of the position the tape left off. it rather is the most important distinction.
